As a general rule/guideline, if I transfer an existing domain from one host to another, how long does it take to make the transition? Is it obvious or seamless to the persons now accessing my domain? Is there an interuption in access?
    Thanks for help.

If you get your own domain you’ll lose your pagerank and start over. The rest I don’t know.

instead of transferring domain, why not using your new host nameserver instead ? its much faster and easy than transferring domain into another host.

Your domain will be unavailable while the domain transfer is in progress

OK, let’s face my lack of knowledge head on — what is “page rank” and why is it important?
    Thanks.

See earlier reply re:page rank. What is a “nameserver”?

With my limited knowledge, I think my answer to “why not” might be, I want to have the ability to modify my WordPress Blog in ways that I can’t without changing to a new web host.
    Thanks for continuing help.

If you have a blog here and you transfer that to a domain you have bought and host elsewhere then there is no actual change period as they are different things. You stop on one and start on the other.

If you have a domain with DreamHost and you decide to move to ASmallOrange, then the changeover can take up to 24 hours. That is for the Domain Name Servers (DNS) to propagate around the net and nothing can accelerate that.

    That help?

A Domain Name Server – when you put an address into a browser and click Go, it first checks the nearest DNS to see where that site is then it goes there (remember that all internet connections are number based, not letter based). So right now if you go to my personal domain you would actually connect to http://207.210.105.50/ but if I moved to another host that IP address would change – and that’s the ‘change of address’ that has to be sent to all the DNS.

And if you click that IP address you’ll see nothing but that’s a whole new story :)

    That help?”

That helps. And that is precisely what I intend to do with the blog. Then when someone tries to reach my blog by using a bookmark or favorite or even types in my URL, will they get a re-direct automatically from somewhere or must I take care of that somehow.
    If so, how?

Unless you buy Domain Mapping (when it happens) there will be no auto-redirect.
The only other option is an entry with “I’ve moved”.
