Collapsing Categories

  1. Collapsing or folding categories would be nice. Category widget that shows only the parent categories, but expand out the child categories when you click on them. I think that would be really good, and can clear up a lot of overly long and cluttered sidebars.

There already exists plugins for it for, and I would love to see it on .com.

  2. When I open the Categories widget I see these options:
    Show as dropdown
    Show post counts
    Show hierarchy

Consequently, I'm not clear about what tour are suggesting as we can already achieve what I think it is that you are describing. Please post again and clarify.
    Thanks, in advance.

  3. I want to normally only show the parent categories in the widget, and show the children categories under the parent category when the visitor clicks on a particular parent category.
    Show hierachy shows every category.
Show as drop down hides everything within a rather ugly dropdown box.

Something like what this plugin does for .org:

It'd be great if we can have that here too.

  4. Okay now I understand what you are asking for. Thanks so much for the clarity.

Please don't be insulted but are you aware that wordpress.COM is a wpMU (mutltiuser) blogging platform? As such we have no individual plugin tabs for our blogs and cannot upload our own plugins. Hence what you are requesting is for a plugin to be added that will be across the entire platform if introduced? I'm wondering because I don't think that such a change is likely to be made in short order and I'd hate to see you waiting for Staff to consider and approve and implement this quickly. Also I have seen wordpress.ORG bloggers throughout the course of the last 3 years make requests for plugins that they were accustomed to having on wordpress.ORG blogs, and be disappointed when they weren't introduced here at wordpress.COM
Best wishes for a happy outcome. :)

  5. I am quite aware of how .com affects all users on the platform. I'm merely suggesting that this might be one change that might be really helpful for a lot of users, and as such be worth it to make an option available for all users.

In the past, we have seen some plugins from .org get implemented in .com, such as separating comments into pages. I hope this can also be implemented.
But it might end up being one of those innumerable plugins that will not be introduced...

  6. @listelesslink
I'm happy to hear that you are aware, as I said above I didn't know if you were or not.
Best wishes with your idea. :)

  7. listlessink -- I think that is a great idea to be implemented here at Wp.Com too.
My category list is getting long and unmanageable and this would make things a bit neater.

    Take care.

  8. BTW my WOrdpress time is off. It is sureely not 2AM in the morning. I hope to bea sleep by then. (LOL)

  9. The time shown here in the forums, if that is what you are referring to is UTC/GMT. WordPress itself and these forums run on UTC/GMT.

  10. The time was wrong - just as my typing was above (ha ha) . I know what GMT time is since I was a shortwave dxer for many many years and it was wrong! Thank You.

  11. I agree that the above suggestion would be great. But I'm just crazy enough to ask for even more!

Since categories and tags apparently behave the same when they are clicked on, it would be nice if WP allowed me to work with them in the same way. The same widget functionality and the same selection capacity in the post editors (quick and full). I much prefer the widget functionality provided for categories over what's provided for tags. But I prefer the tag selection functionality in the editors over that for categories.

If you look at my blog, you'll see that I use tags to group my posts like volumes in an encyclopedia, while I use categories to allow the reader to create unique groupings according to content. This used to be the other way around, but I was forced to switch them because of the limitations of the tag cloud widget. The unfortunate side-effect of this is that I now have to contend with that awful scroll box when I'm assigning categories to a post.

  14. @asntech,

Sorry, you are in the wrong forum and need to head over to http://wordpress.ORG/support/ as that blog is self-hosted and self-hosted wordpress blogs using the software from wordpress.ORG are supported there.

This is the forum for people hosted here on the wordpress.COM free hosting service and things here work differently and our answers typically will not work for you.

If you do not know the difference, see this sticky thread from the top of the forums: .
