Comments on my blog from me, but not from me?

  1. Good Morning,

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and help. I was just writing my daily post and pressed submit. Upon doing so, I noticed I had new comments. Clicked through to see what was pending and saw this strange thing where it says, for example "Title of 1 of my posts" commented on "Title of 2nd one of my posts" etc. repeating through different posts I have 8 times.

If I go to the comments page of the dashboard it says that I made these comments. But, it lists an IP address out of texas and my email address isn't there as it usually is.

Did I do something wrong? I can of course trash these comments or mark them as spam as needed but I wanted to be sure that if I did something wrong I didn't do it again-- or if I'd been hacked I took the appropriate next steps.

    Thanks again for any insight.

  2. Heya - I had exactly the same thing happen to me yesterday. I was told by another user it might have been a "pingback"...?

  3. Got it, that would make sense I think. Thank you for your help! I tried to search before posting but had no idea what to even search for.

  4. You are right. If you put a link to one of your older posts in a new post it will 'pingback' each link just as if a different blog had linked to your post. :)

  5. Thank you! I learn something new everyday on here. I appreciate all of you for sharing your knowledge. :)

  6. Oh! Thanks!--I am doing a series, and if I link to the previous posts, it's considered a "ping back"? -See how dumb I am? My series is about learning how to write a blog. Ha ha. I wondered what happened when I saw I had made comments to myself. Are there rules against this? Since I'm actually doing it to myself, I guess it's okay as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for the info. I thought it was some sort of spam or virus or something. After many emails from myself trying to sell me Viagra through a pharmacy in India, I had to wonder. Thanks again for the info.

  7. Julie-- I'm not sure but I'm sure someone else can clarify. I'm glad I'm not the only one with the problem!

  8. Self-pings usually happen when you put a link in a post to another post or page from your own blog. They appear as comments, but there's no need (and no point) in answering them! Read this to understand:

  9. Thank you to both of you for the helpful links. I appreciate it!

  10. You're welcome. :)
