Complicated url upgrade & name change question (at least I think it is…)

  • I purchased a url upgrade from wordpress.com, but now want to redirect my traffic to an entirely new url using wordpress.org. Can I do that?

    Example –
    My wordpress.com blog is booksexy.wordpress.com
I purchased a url upgrade to booksexyreview.com 3-4 years ago.
Now, I would like to upgrade to wordpress.org – but also change/export my current blog to a new url – brandnewname.com

Can I do this, re-direct my current traffic to the new url and not lose page rank? I should have just changed the name when I bought the original url upgrade, but not being tech savvy I thought if I did I’d lose my page rank, subscribers, etc.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi,
This is definitely possible. You would need a site redirect upgrade from the store. First get the WordPress.org site up and running and then buy the site redirect. Site redirect will take care of redirecting your traffic to the new domain name.

The site redirect will have it side effects on you page rank. The amount of difference in the page rank (loss or gain) is very uncertain and varies for each site. You ideally shouldn’t lose your current Subscribers (if you setup the site correctly), but there might be a dip in acquiring new subscribers initially.

  • Thanks simplysaru. One other questions – if I do a Guided Transfer will one of the WordPress engineers be able to help me set the site redirect up as well?

  • Yes, they will be able to set it up for you.
Here is a handy support document on Guided Transfers.
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

Do read through the whole document to understand in detail about the guided transfer options, and then decide for yourself. If you have any questions feel free to get back.
