Conversion of wp blog and getting domain name?
Currently with my blog(ex: abcd.wordpress.com) I’m not able to access plugins, I can only access Widgets and add it to my blog.
I want to get rid of wp.com from my blog’s URL.
For this, I’m planning to get a domain name for $18(as mentioned at wp support site).
What will be the benefits of doing this(other than getting rid of wordpress.com at the end of the URL) ?
Off the top of my head:
Hosting your own site will make it seem more professional and serious. You could also get a (email redacted) email address.
You have access to more themes, and you can access more of the code if you want to really, really customize the look of your blog.
You can open an ecommerce store, if you want to run an online business. You can make money off ads on your site, or opt to not have any ads at all.
You’re not as beholden to WP terms of service. You get more storage. Your theme can’t change on you without notice.
You can use more customized analytics tools to monitor your traffic.
But really, to me, the best benefit it that makes the world take you, and your voice, more seriously. Any hobbyist or amateur can get abcd.wordpress.com–which is actually one of the GREATEST thing about wordpress. But you won’t seem as fly-by-night if you actually own your own domain.
oh! my fake example email got redacted? Let’s try again. With your own URL, you can have an address that looks like
your name [at] abcd dot com
FTP access and plugins are only for VIP bloggers http://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/ or for those with WordPress.ORG installs.

Also note that we Volunteers provide support only for free hosted WordPress.COM blogs on this support forum. To obtain advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers you can post to the WordPress.ORG support forums. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.
Thanks a lot “positdesign” and “thistimethisspace” for helping. :)
Is this possible to add advertisements to my blog after some time when I’ll get good traffic.
I’m comparing this with Google Adsense under Blogger blog.
There’s is only one advertising program here at WordPress.com called WordAds which is for blogs on their own domains that you can apply to have your blog in. http://wordads.co/
You need to know that blogger initiated advertising is not allowed on any free hosted WordPress.com blog. We cannot advertise or sell any products we do not personally create or sell services we do not personally provide on free hosted WordPress.com blogs. If you do require an ecommerce site, advertising, affiliate links, paid or sponsored content you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org
Refer to > http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/
There is no upgrade, aside from a VIP hosting upgrade http://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/ that you can purchase that allows blogger initiated advertising on a free hosted WordPress.com blog. You will have to hire a web host and set up your own WordPress.org install to run your own advertising.
E-commerce transactions via shopping carts and the like cannot be conducted on free blogs from and being free hosted by WordPress.com. Paid content and/or sponsored content is not allowed.
On free hosted WordPress.com blog we can use a contact form and/or a PayPal donation button for sale of only products or services created or provided by ourselves.
Remember, above all, that each upgrade at WordPress.com applies only exactly to what it says it does. A custom domain gives you a custom domain; it doesn’t exempt you from the Terms of Service or security restrictions, doesn’t allow you to use FTP or place ads. Custom Design allows you to adapt existing Wp.com themes, not add themes from elsewhere. Etc. Etc.
Thanks a lot for your information provided above:
After looking at above comments, I’m just briefing what I want:
– I’m current having a free wordpress blog(ex: abcd.wordpress.com.)
– Planning to change it to (ex: abcd.com) by purchasing custom domain(.com by paying $18)
– I just want to create my own contents under my blog and after getting good traffic, I want to earn money by advertisements etc.(mentioned here: http://wordads.co/).
– Will use a free theme with right-left menus etc.
– will add different categories etc, connecting my site to social media etc
I’m going towards right track or not?
Sure. But I warn you if your ultimate goal is advertising income, WordAds is not going to be your best bet. It does not pay well. On the plus side, you don’t have to buy hosting.
