Cookie banner won't go away :(

  • Hi,

I run two blogs from my account and my newer blog uses the Apostrophe 2 theme. I’ve had no issues with it until now. When I go to view my blog’s front page the EU cookie banner shows up, but when I click on it to accept it just refreshes the page instead of just disappearing. As soon as the page is refreshed the cookie banner shows again. This isn’t happening on my other blog that runs a different theme. Is there any way it can be fixed or whoever programs wordpress to fix it. It’s probably only visible to EU people but I need the cookie banner to disappear or some people visiting my blog might get annoyed with it always displayed :(

    The blog is mypeacockliving.wordpress.com

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

The banner is disappearing as it should for me when I click the button.

Can you please try clearing your browser cache and cookies and see if that makes a difference? Very ironically it could be that the cookie we set in your browser when you click that banner is being blocked by an expired cookie that hasn’t been deleted. Flushing your browser cookies should resolve that.

  • I’ve done that and it does seem to be working now. How silly, lol But thank you very much for helping. and I’ll remember that if it happens again :)

  • Nope, I spoke too soon, the minute I go looking around the blog every page has a cookie banner displayed and no matter how many times I delete cookies, it just takes lading any of my blog posts to constantly have the cookie banner displayed and clicking ‘accept/ok’ makes it refresh the page.

  • What do you see when trying a different browser or incognito window?

  • I’ve just tried going into a private window and it does seem to work. It seems to just be a problem with my own account when viewing the blog. Not sure if this is an issue for everyone using wordpress or just my own self. My other blog which I also run on this account doesn’t have that issue, my other blog’s theme is Nucleare which makes me wonder if it’s an Apostrophe 2 issue ?

  • @mypeacockbooks if you use your own account in another browser, and dismiss the cookie there, does the message keep reappearing there as well?

  • A German user also had this problem. She got it solved. She wrote: “I simply placed the widget further up in the sidebar, in my case it is now “above the RRS feeds”.

  • This still seems to be an issue for me and I’ve now tried multiple blogger’s sites and the same thing is happening on all of them. And it happens regardless of cookie deletion, which browser I use or whether I view privately or not. I’m not the only blogger who’s experiencing this either now. I don’t know if something was updated to the EU cookie banner widget with the recent implementation of GDPR but it’s not working and whoever deals with the programming, please help.

  • It’s even happening when viewing blogs on my phone!

  • Hello,

You are not alone to get this issue.
In order to confirm my message here : https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/capture-consent-hide-the-banner-issues/#post-3114738
Could you please check if on http://mypeacockliving.wordpress.com/ & the other website you have the widget “Cookies & consents banner” activated?

I guess you have it only on http://mypeacockliving.wordpress.com/
On the other website, you have the default banner activated on all wordpress.com websites.

For Staff information, this issue doesn’t occur with WordPress.org & Jetpack but I can easily reproduces it on WordPress.com, so I don’t think this is linked to Jetpack pluging directly.

  • Yes it is activated. The widget’s on both my blogs. Do I need to disable it?

  • Sorry just read it, I got rid of the widget for the cookie banner and that initial message still comes up. Seems okay at the moment. At the time I put the widget there I don’t think WordPress automatically placed the banner on my site but now that it does it by default it is indeed conflicting.

  • Same issue with my blog. kenwood31 is right: the widget is conflicting with the new default WordPress banner implemented for all sites. I deleted the widget and opened in incognito, and the banner appears as expected as well as disappears when clicked. No refresh problems. So, it seems you don’t need the widget and should delete it.

  • Yes, at the moment, if you don’t want to personalize the text you don’t need the widget.

But this is clearly a bug because we should be able to modify the text.

  • Ah, thanks folks. I’m not sure how I didn’t see these replies.

You should be able to customize the widget. Can anyone else confirm whether moving the widget up helps?

I haven’t been able to reproduce this on a test site yet.

  • I moved the widget around up and down in the available space but it didn’t seem to make a difference until I took the widget away. It seems that no widget is the fix to the conflict, maybe wordpress needs to make the default banner available to us in settings for modifying the text?

  • Same here, problem started on May 25 – I have 2 blogs that have a ‘landing page’ with a post overview and the widget closes there, but not if you click into a post. With the two other blogs without the ‘landing page’ the widgets won’t close either.

    The blogs are:
    dinnerfornone.wordpress.com
kikiskuechenleben.wordpresscom – these are the two with the landing page
    kospics.wordpress.com
    throughalaywomanslens.wordpresscom

    @mypeacockbooks
    – moving the widget did not help on my blogs

    @pursuitofnatural
& @kenwood31 – what do you mean by “the widget is conflicting with the new default WordPress banner implemented for all sites” and “if you don’t want to personalize the text you don’t need the widget.”
–> When I disable the widgets, I don’t see a WordPress default banner on my sites – where would that be?

  • Thanks, I’m going to try deleting the widget :)
