Creating Icons for Social Menu

The theme I am using (Publication) has icons for Facebook and Linkedin, but not Quora or Soundcloud. How do I create icons for the last two?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

As you mentioned, it doesn’t look like the Publication Theme provides support for those 2 icons you mentioned. There’s a list of the social menu icons available here (scroll down to ‘Social Menu’):

No problem :)
Sometimes I try a couple of different search terms if I don’t find what I want right away.
In this case, there’s a link embedded within the very last paragraph of the article you referenced (https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/social-links-menu/) that led to the (possible?) solution.
If your theme doesn’t support any of the above methods for adding social links, you can follow our guide for adding social links to a widget. It’s the most manual method of all, but it works in any theme that supports widgets.
So following a link was the key.

I am sorry that I forgot to change this to resolved.
I was trying to do it with a free plan, which I guess is not possible. When I switched to the premium plan it started working. I don’t recall the support doc saying that it only working with a premium plan.

If you want to reorder the widgets you are able to do that from here. I’d suggest moving the social menu up to the top of the list so it’s more easily found by your visitors. You can do this with a simple click and drag action.
The Premium upgrade is not required for a social menu or widgets.
I’m happy to give you a refund if you do not feel that you will use the additional features of Premium. and we can downgrade your plan to WordPress.com Personal Plan where you can still keep your custom domain.

It’s interesting you should say that. The main reason I went with premium is I thought I would have control over how featured images are cropped. This is because many of my featured images have their heads chopped off, etc.
I was told by another happiness engineer that my theme wants them to be 2000 px wide by 1500 px high. I have 150 posts.
- That’s a lot of images to load into a photo editor and convert to those dimensions.
What if I make those changes and then I change themes? Will it have different requirements for featured images and I will have to modify 150 images again?
So I guess the question is what else could I do in premium that I would find useful. Is there a support doc you would recommend that would give me some idea of what I could do with css and other features of premium?

https://en.support.wordpress.com/customize/With regards to featured image sizes (as well as header and background images), yes – these are usually theme-dependent.
For example, we know that your current theme, Publication, recommends featured images to be 2000px wide by 1500px high.
But the Karuna theme uses full-width header, footer, and featured images that will stretch to 1040px across, but the height will vary, depending on the actual image size.
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/karuna/”However, manually resizing each featured/header image may not be necessary when switching themes, but you will want to take a look at how each theme will display those images within their specified frames, or containers.
Quickly previewing themes in the customizer – without having to commit the changes – is perfect for this.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/And if you do find the need to resize or edit multiple image files at once, there are some free and inexpensive photo editing tools available that can expedite this process. Maybe try a Google search of ‘batch editing images’ or ‘batch resize images’.
If you don’t mind my asking, is there something specific that you would like to do on your site, that your current theme does not support?

Putting the image issue aside, what’s left is

Flexibility in choosing colors and fonts.On the other hand, I like how
- Publisher’s side bar menu works
when you select a parent or first child, it displays a preview of each post with within the parent or first child. -

After reading them, it looks like Publisher probably has the flexibility in choosing colors and fonts as long as I keep the premium plan.
I like the idea that Karuna (which is Sanskrit for compassion) handles featured images differently. However, it looks like the menu goes across the top. I have so many parents that they will wrap around. This is why I like the sidebar menu in Publisher.
Also when you select a parent or first child, Publisher displays “thumbnails” (previews?) of all of the posts within that parent or first child.
I will try to the preview of Karuna to see what I think.

In Publisher’s customizer, there is no “Theme Options”. I have taken a screenshot, but I cannot see a way to attach it.

Let’s talk about the images first. As mentioned, each of our themes is going to display a featured image in it’s own unique way. If you changed your theme the images would remain at their current size and not adjust to the new theme recommendations. This is less of an issue when using featured images but you’d definitely want to adjust any header images to meet the specifications of that particular theme. Those are more likely to look ‘off’ if not the correct size.
I think you’ve already found this information, but just to be sure, I’d like to mention that each of our themes has its own unique instructional page. This page will help you set up the different theme features and options. Publication and Karuna.
It might be useful to setup a test site where you can experiment with different themes. You can add one here. This would give you a place to test out different themes and ideas minus the worry of messing up your site. You’d simply add another .wordpress.com site (for free) to your account, then access it from ‘My Sites’ in the upper left hand corner of your logged in screen.
Custom colors and fonts are part of your WordPress.com Premium Plan. You’re also gaining 10gb of media storage, and access to live chat support
In Publisher’s customizer, there is no “Theme Options”. I have taken a screenshot, but I cannot see a way to attach it.
If you upload the screen shot into your media library I’ll be able to take a look at it for you.

I uploaded it to my media library. I called it Screen Shot Customizer Publication.png
I have found the instructional pages, but there seems to be no way to navigate to them except to put the name of the theme in the URL. Have I missed something here?
In my six months here, I have only used 117MB of storage. How would I ever use 10GB of storage? Can I upload videos or something?
Doesn’t the personal plan come with live support?

Thanks for uploading that screen shot. Your Customizer has all of the correct options listed on the left hand side for the Publication Theme. Was there a specific option or feature you needed help getting set up?
Your site is using The Publication Theme which is different from The Publisher Theme.
To navigate to the instructional pages for the themes you need to open a new browser tab. There is not a way to navigate straight from the customizer to those pages.
You are able to host your own videos via our Premium Plan. Without Premium you would need to embed a link via a third party site like YouTube. Here’s more info on VideoPress.
Our Personal Plan does come with live chat support but not VideoPress.
One more note about media storage… Deleting an item from your media library will break wherever it was on your site as well. If you are running out of space it is best to upgrade and not break all the images on your site.

Also I haven’t figured out how to navigate to the theme instructional page from anywhere in support. I have been typing in the URL to get to each one: https://wordpress.com/themes/karuna/ If I want to see coherent next, I replace karuna in the URL with coherent. There must be an easier way to do this.

Actually, when previewing other themes, you don’t want to start out in the Customizer, even though you will end up there. According to https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/#preview-themes
- From your dashboard, go to My Sites > Themes.
- Find a theme you want to try, then click on the three dots to the right of the theme’s name
- Click on ‘Try & Customize‘.

If you are already previewing themes using the method outlined above, then you can click the ‘Info’ button that appears in the middle of a theme’s thumbnail image when hovering your mouse pointer over it. (instead of the 3 dots)
Otherwise, from the Theme Showcase https://wordpress.com/themes/ you can also click on any theme’s name, located at the bottom left corner, just below each theme’s thumbnail, and across from the ‘demo’ and ‘activate’ links. It will be in a blue bar that appears when you hover your mouse pointer over the thumbnail image.
To find specific themes, type the names in the search box

Thank you! I never could have figured that on my own. I tried it with Karuna and it is showing the full photo of me ( not chopping off the top of my head)!
On the downside, the menu is at the bottom of the page (who looks down there?). I will have to see if I can move it.
Worst of all, it is showing some first children as parents in the menu. In other words, a few of the sub categories are showing up as categories, but all of the sub categories.
