Custom DNS validated but not working

  • Hello,

I bought domain mapping for my blog http://mercigranny.wordpress.com and I bought the url mercigranny.com from a third party

I successfully changed my primary domain and tried to add custom DNS so that my blog can be reached from both http://mercigranny.com and http://www.mercigranny.com

I checked with the 3rd party I bought the url with and since the DNS are with wordpress there is nothing they can do about it.

I edited the custom DNS for quite a long time now and I still can’t reach my blog using http://www.mercigranny.com
Could you help me fix this ?

It is quite bothering not to understand how to fix it myself :(

    Thanks !

    Melanie

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Melanie,

WordPress.com automatically takes the www out of URLs, so your domain http://www.mercigranny.com will always be redirected to http://mercigranny.com. You are welcome to give out either address, and your visitors can reach your blog using either address.

Redirecting the first version of your URL to the second version helps to ensure that search engines index your site properly. Please let me know if I can provide any further help with this. :)

  • Hello,

Thanks for your super quick feedback. However it is not working dor le. Did you tried typing http://www.mercigranny.com ? I display a site under construction page (whether I am logged in or not) and it is not a matter of TTL or propagation as it has been like this for months before I noticed.

Should I remove the custom DNS subdomain for www in my process ?

  • Hi Melanie,

Sorry about that! Yes, if you want that automatic redirect I mentioned to work, you’ll need to remove the www subdomain from your custom DNS (under Store > My Domains > Edit DNS in your blog’s dashboard). That A record in your custom DNS is pointing your www subdomain to a different website host, instead of letting us redirect it to your blog at mercigranny.com.

Once you remove the subdomain there, it may take a little time for the change to take effect. If you have any trouble with it, please let me know.

  • Hello again,

Thanks a lot for your super quick feedback.
I removed the custom DNS entry and indeed it fixed the issue.

    The redirection is already working.
    You can close this thread?

    Thanks.

  • Hi Melanie,

You’re very welcome. I’m glad it’s working now. :) I’ll go ahead and close this thread, but if you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us again.
