Customising fonts, and background colours for headers and text, multiple menus

  • Hi
I have a WordPress.com site with Twenty-Ten theme currently. I would like greater flexibility in fonts, etc., Features I must have include the following:

Top menu (say, up to eight items)

Side sub-menus (i.e. when a top level menu item is clicked a second-level page appears with a side menu

Good choice of fonts for headings and text

Good choice of background colours for headings

Choice of background colours for paragraphs

Ability to have text boxes with borders and background colours

Images with ability to encode links in captions

Ability to create long HTML pages, but split with ‘page forward’ and ‘back’ at bottom of each section

Are there upgrades (or other themes) that would give me all this?

    Many thanks

    Rob

  • Hi there!

The following features you requested are already included in most of our themes!

    • Top menu & Side sub-menus – Most of our themes allow you to setup Custom Menus. This is also a feature you can search for in our theme showcase.
    • Images with ability to encode links in captions – You can add captions (with links) to any image through the Image Settings.
    • Ability to create long HTML pages, but split with ‘page forward’ and ‘back’ at bottom of each section – Sounds like you want to use Next Page breaks

These features are included in our Custom Design upgrade:

    • Good choice of fonts for headings and text
    • Good choice of background colours for headings
    • Choice of background colours for paragraphs

Fonts and Colors are included in their own tabs in the Customizer, but you can change almost anything about your theme using CSS.

I’m not sure I know what you mean by this one:

    • Ability to have text boxes with borders and background colours

Can you clarify? Do you want to have spaces where readers can input text?

Let me know if I can help further!

  • Hi Many thanks for your reply – very helpful.

The text boxes with borders are just paragraphs that I highlight from the rest of the text by backgrounding them in colour and putting a border round. There’s no user text input. So the question is: can I have a single paragraph with a different background colour than the paragraphs immediately above and below? And can I also put a border round it? Can Custom Design allow this?

With the menus, what I would like is to have menus associated with individual pages. Thus, the user clicks a menu item on the top menu on the home page. A page appears with various text and images. That page has a sub-menu along the side that only appears when that page is selected. If another page is selected, the previous side sub-menu disappears, and another menu appears in its place. Thus, each page has its own unique side sub-menu that appears only when that page is selected. Is this possible?

Thirdly, the custom design upgrade cost $30 per annum. So would it be better for me to migrate to BlueHost and WordPress.org and pay for a customisable menu there – for example the new ‘X’ theme?

Many thanks for your help, this is much appreciated.

  • Hi
Just another question related to the one above:
Can Twenty Ten theme support multiple menus if I buy the Customise upgrade at $30.00.
    Many thanks

Okay! So, we do have blockquotes which are implemented differently in each theme, sometimes they include a border and background color sometimes they don’t. (Your quote above is in a blockquote.) You can also add inline styling to your paragraph tags through the text editor. You’ll want to do something like this:

    <p style="background:#ffffff; color:black; border-style:solid; border-color:black;">Your text goes here!</p>

Background is the background color of the paragraph. Color is the text color.

With the menus, what I would like is to have menus associated with individual pages. Thus, the user clicks a menu item on the top menu on the home page. A page appears with various text and images. That page has a sub-menu along the side that only appears when that page is selected. Thanks for this clarification! You can definitely achieve this using the Custom Menu Widget. All of our widgets have visibility settings, so you can create a menu for the widget and set it up so that the widget only appears on a certain page. Here’s some more info on widget visibility:

If you move to a self-hosted WordPress.org site, you won’t need to purchase a customizable menu, but you may need to purchase the theme you want to use. If you require features the WordPress.com doesn’t offer, WordPress.org is a great option! You can read a bit more about the differences here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Can Twenty Ten theme support multiple menus if I buy the Customise upgrade at $30.00.

Twenty Ten only has the one site-wide menu. However like I mentioned before, we do have the Custom Menu Widget, which can go in any widget area. Twenty Ten has two sidebars and a footer that you could add the Menu Widget to.

Does that clarify things for you? Let me know if I can answer any other questions! :)

  • Hi
Many thanks for this, very helpful. I’ll stay with WordPress.com and go with the Custom upgrade at $30.
    Kind regards
    Rob

  • Great! Let me know if I can help you get set up or if you have any other questions! :)
