Daily comment spam not caught by filters

  • Hi,

For several months now, I’ve been getting spam comments on my blog posts that are not caught by your default filters. The comments are usually very similar, yet they persist in getting through, at the rate of at least one but up to 20 daily comments. I have comment email notification enabled, which alerts me to these comments and enables me to act on them. But I can’t monitor this activity 24 hours a day, and would like to know how these comments are getting through, and what I can do about it?

    Thanks!

  • Spammers are becoming more inventive every day. Akismet is a learning engine. If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it’s spam.

There is no such thing as eliminating all spam but Akismet works very well. For more information please take the time to read “5 things every blogger should know about spam” on this page Akismet: How it works http://akismet.com/how/

  • Hi timethief,

That’s really my point: I’ve been marking these comments as spam for several months, and I continue to get very similar comment spam, which I find surprising.

Thanks timethief. I’ve copied my question there. I’m still curious as to whether anyone else was seeing a similar pattern in their comments.

  • We are all seeing an increase in spam. However, these technical support threads cannot be used as discussion threads to poll the community on anything whatsoever.

  • Too bad, as I am having the same problem. I’ll go to askimet, but these spam comments are becoming increasingly frequent, despite marking it as spam. It’s really frustrating.

  • I did go to Askimet as well: filed a ticket, created an API key, but still no word, and spam comments continue.

  • @deesto
You have a free hosted WordPress.com blog linked to your username. You don’t need an API key. They are only for those who do not have free hosted WordPress.com blogs.
