Delay in posts reaching the WP reader

    Hi there,

    I publish a travel theme each week and have recently had followers let me know those specific posts weren’t showing up in their WordPress readers, despite the fact that other posts I have written were showing up. I did some checking through another blog I own and while my other posts showed up in the reader shortly after publication, there was a substantial (many hours) delay on the travel theme post reaching the reader, which might account for people thinking it wasn’t showing up. It’s not a big concern, because everyone checks in at some point anyway, but I told my readers I would investigate and was wondering if there was anything about how I post the travel themes that could be causing the delay.     Hi there,

    I don’t see any reason why this should happen offhand. Do you pre-schedule these posts? If so, these posts won’t distribute until someone visits the site, which may be the culprit.

    Thanks for getting back to me (and thanks timethief for tagging.)

    I haven’t been pre-scheduling these posts (although it’s good to know that info for future reference) – I’ve been posting immediately, just as I do with almost all of my posts, so am at a loss as to why there’s a delay in reaching the reader.

    How long is this delay?

    I go first to Google because the search engines send a significant traffic to blogs unlike topics pages traffic which is negligible.

    This isn’t about showing up in the topics pages – it actually shows up fine there. It also isn’t about folks finding me via keywords on Google etc, no problem there either. Here is the issue:

    A couple of thousand of my WordPress subscribers are used to accessing the posts via their WordPress ‘Blogs I follow’ reader. Several of them have told me that about three weeks ago, they stopped seeing my weekly travel theme posts in their WordPress reader, even though my other posts showed up in their reader as usual.

    I don’t know the exact length of the delay – last time I posted one it still wasn’t showing up in the WordPress reader 3 hours later – when I checked the next morning it was showing, but that was 11 hours after publishing. Even with a 3 hour delay there’s a good chance, if folks are following several blogs, that the post will be buried by more recently published posts – I’m guessing that is what is causing subscribers to think it isn’t appearing.

    Hi there,

    I know this is annoying – I’m very sorry!

    So, I can’t see a reason on my end why this is happening. Could you by chance impose on one of your readers to get a screenshot of their Reader when the post isn’t showing up when it should? It would be helpful to have that username, the screenshot, and be able to see the point in the Reader where the post SHOULD be appearing.

    Conversely, if you’d rather not wait for a new post, it would be great if you could let me know of a user who was having this issue, and the time this post SHOULD have appeared (the most recent one), and I can see if I can log in as that user and see where the post actually appeared.

    Hi Zandy.

    I posted a travel theme today (not scheduled, pubished immediately) at 10.32am PST – email went out to email subscribers fine, but it is now 12pm PST and it is still not showing up in the ‘Blogs I Follow’ WordPress reader of my WP subscriber backpackchick despite repeated refreshing.

    When backpackchick does a search in topics under Travel Theme, other posts – that have been written by subscribers responding to my travel theme challenge and published after my post, show up in the WordPress reader – but not my original post.

    Update – it is now 5:21 pm PST and my post is still not visible, seven hours after publication – either in the ‘Blogs I Follow’ stream or in the results stream when doing a search for ‘travel theme’ (again, other bloggers responses show up, but not my original post.) This is not just a user-specific issue, I’ve had quite a number of people let me know they’ve not been receiving these posts for coming up on four weeks.

    Hi again,

    I have done two things so far – I’m following your blog to keep up to date on the publish status of your posts and I’ve made a minor tweak that may help your posts show up. I’m still not sure why these particular posts would be delayed, but we’ll keep looking at it and hopefully get it sorted out by the next post.
