Deleted site

  1. I recently started using .org instead of .com and deleted the site from the wordpress.com interface. This deleted the entire site from both sites. I had no idea this would happen. Can it be reinstalled?

The blog I need help with is roryphotographydublin.wordpress.com.

  2. Hi there,

I believe you are talking about deleted site eamonnhall.wordpress.com. It would be helpful if you provide few more details.

    1. Did you migrate this site in past?
    2. If yes then to which host?
    3. What is the domain name of .org site?
    4. Did you install Jetpack plugin for .org site?

  3. Hi Krutidugade,

Thanks for your reply. I'm actually referring to a site called phibsboropress.ie. I set the site up on wordpress.com but then realised the .org platform would be more useful so I set up hosting with HostingIreland.com.

I didn't install jetpack. I didn't realise this was required.

  4. Hi there, @eamonnhall - phibsboropress.ie appears to be currently mapped to phibsboropress.wordpress.com, a WordPressdotcom site, but that site is not deleted. I can see it is using the Affinity theme.

If you purchased your domain from WordPressdotcom/WildWestDomains and you want to use it on a standalone WP install at HostingIreland.com you would need to point your domain nameservers in your domain dashboard to the nameservers you receive from HostingIreland.com

If you registered your domain with another domain registrar, you would need to change your nameservers in that registrar's domain dashboard.

You do not need to install Jetpack on your self-hosted WP site, but it will give you many of the features that you are familiar with from WordPressdotcom.

Let us know if you need any other information.

  5. Hi @justjennifer. Thanks for your reply. Very helpful but I'm still a little confused. Apologies, I'm new to WordPress and find it very counter intuitive to use.

I registered a domain with HostingIreland.com so do I need to change my nameservers in that registrar's domain dashboard?

Is there a reason I was denied access to the site after deleting the original WordPressdotcom site? This doesn't make sense as it was being hosted by a third party.

    Thanks again
    Eamonn

  6. Hello again,

I registered a domain with HostingIreland.com so do I need to change my nameservers in that registrar's domain dashboard?
If you are also now using their web hosting (in addition to having purchased your domain from them), then consult with their support on what you need to do to point your domain to your new site.

Is there a reason I was denied access to the site after deleting the original WordPressdotcom site? This doesn't make sense as it was being hosted by a third party.

Denied access to which site? phibsboropress.wordpress.com is not deleted and your domain phibsboropress.ie is currently mapped to it.

Do you maybe need to be logged in with a different account than this one?

Do you see an upgrade plan under this account when you look at your Manage Purchases dashboard? https://wordpress.com/me/purchases

In order to map a custom domain here, you would have needed to purchase an upgrade plan. If you don't see anything in the Manage Purchases dashboard under this account, then this is not the account that purchased the upgrade plan.

  7. PS I have also tagged this thread for Staff assistance as ultimately we will probably need their help to sort this out. Since they are currently away at their annual get-together, responses may be delayed. Thanks for your patience. I or another forum volunteer will none-the-less try to help you in the meantime.

  8. Hi,

Apologies if I'm not being clear.

"Denied access to which site? phibsboropress.wordpress.com is not deleted and your domain phibsboropress.ie is currently mapped to it."

This is because I had to set it up again on a new plan and remap it to the domain. I had set up a .org profile and was using that to build my site but I now can't access it and it has no record of my account/login details.

There no upgrade available on the manage purchase dashboard that you linked to but there is the option to upgrade to premium or business on the Mysites >> plans section. Am I right in thinking that there is no need to upgrade when using a third party hosting with .org?

  9. Thanks again for your help.

  10. @krutidugade

    To answer your questions:

    1. Did you migrate this site in past?
    Yes

    2. If yes then to which host?
    To HostingIreland.com

    3. What is the domain name of .org site?
It was phibsboropress.ie. However it disappeared once I deleted phibsboropress.wordpress.com

    4. Did you install Jetpack plugin for .org site?
No. I assume your asking this due to the backup feature. Unfortunately I wasn't of Jetpack.

  11. Hi Eamonn,

I had set up a .org profile and was using that to build my site but I now can't access it and it has no record of my account/login details.

As @justjennifer suggested, you get in touch with your hosting provider support. They can help you recover your account to which you have lost access for some reason.
Once you get this sorted you can migrate your site phibsboropress.ie to WordPress.org by following document linked below:
    https://move.wordpress.com

There no upgrade available on the manage purchase dashboard

If your account doesn't show any existing plan then there is a chance your site is managed by another WordPress.com account. As having a custom domain name like 'phibsboropress.ie' needs an upgrade plan.

Am I right in thinking that there is no need to upgrade when using a third party hosting with .org?

For migrating you don't need to purchase any upgrade plan. WP.org sites are independent of WP.com. The only purchase you make for .org sites is for hosting from third party.

    Hope this clears your confusion.

  12. @krutidugade thanks for your help. I'll let you know how it works out. Cheers

  13. Hi there,

So in the past few days you've had phibsboropress.ie mapped to three separate WordPress.com sites: phibsboropress.wordpress.com, phibsboro.wordpress.com (deleted) and roryphotographydublin.wordpress.com

None of those sites are in any way connected to your self-hosted site, and it's impossible that deleting any of those sites can take your self-hosted site offline.

You need to distinguish between your site and your domain. The domain, phibsboropress.ie, is now pointed to webhostingireland. If the domain is not loading your site there, it's either a problem on their end, or it's a problem in your browser. To rule out the latter, please clear your browser cache. If that makes no difference, please contact your hosting provider as we're not able to help with this.

  14. Hi @kokkieh

Thanks, that makes sense now. I've been struggling to understand WordPress and the difference between WordPress.com and the self-hosting version over the last few days. Its pretty confusing but I've got a handle on it now and the self-hosted site is working fine.

I have a little web development experience but I still find this platform needlessly complex and extremely frustrating. A few simple alert boxes or a more intuitive interface could save a newcomer like myself a huge amount of confusion. The learning curve is incredibly steep and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of first time users give up in sheer frustration and move to simpler platforms like squarespace.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate your reply. All the best
