Do I have to upgrade my WordPress.com account in order to use the domain I already own?

    Hi,
For a couple of years I’ve had a self-hosting website. I’d like to go back to the old-school WordPress.com free website, using the domain I recently renewed through InMotion Hosting. However, when I go to WordPress.com domain mapping, it says I have to upgrade my account in order to use the domain I already own. This was why I was deleting my self-hosted site … I didn’t want to continue paying $100+/year for a website. Is there a way around this? I know how to point the DNS servers on the domain side… but I don’t want to make that change if it won’t work, and somehow break something. :(
    Thanks in advance!

The blog I need help with is nataliecone.wordpress.com.

    Hello @nataliecone,

You have two options here. You can either map your existing domain or completely transfer your domain over to WordPress.com. Keeping in mind your affinity to WordPress.com, I strongly suggest the latter option (domain transfer). However, the end decision is yours. Either way, we will aways be here to help you.

So with either options to use a domain you already own with WordPress.com requires you to upgrade to one of the WordPress.com plans. You can read more about the available plans here

And about your worry with pointing the DNS and the probable downfalls you fear it comes with? Don’t worry about it. First make your decision about if you want to map a domain or transfer it over completely to WordPress.com. Then follow the steps provided for mapping or transfer respective to the choice you make. Following the steps given in these documents alone should help you set it all up successfully.

In case you feel stuck at any point you can always post here in the forum about your query or access the live chat support(with WordPress.com staff) you would have with one of your paid upgrade plans.

Hope this answers your questions. If you feel I have missed out on any part of your question, please feel free to reply to this post with your question. Happy to help.

All the best with any choice you make.
