Domain Mapping and FTP Uploads
After I registered my domain with a host (not WP) and I changed the DNS and directed it to WP….I read the following about Domain Mapping on WP:
The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes and plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and must still abide by our Terms of Service accordingly.
OKAY. So what I get from this is…that because I have a domain name somewhere else besides WP, I cannot utilize any FTP’s and I cannot install plug-ins, themes etc.
Does this mean EVERYONE who does upload themes and plugins has gotten a domain from WordPress? I don’t think so. So how do I get FTP enabled for WordPress? Is there another feature that I have to buy? Please help. Thank you.
The blog I need help with is gilbertmusings.com.
No, not at all.
The use of FTP, plugins, external themes, advertising, etc, etc has nothing to do with any upgrades available at WordPress.com. They cannot be used at WordPress.com, period, outside the VIP program ($600 per month and up).
To use those, you need to get an externally hosted blog, not a domain. You need to find a web host and buy some hosting from them, upload software from WordPress.ORG in the webspace, and go from there.
This will clarify the differences:
You’ve been most helpful. Thank you very much for the information. It can all be quite daunting for a newbie if one doesn’t know where to look for info. Thanks again.
