Domain Mapping and Redirect
Okay I read all the posts in the support I could and I’ve read several posts in the forum but I’m a bit confused.
I just bought my own domain (with hostgator). I have my content from my wp.com all set up and transfer to wp.org
Now I’m looking in to having my wp.com page redirect to my new domain. The only way I can see to do it is the domain mapping for $10/year right?
Well reading the page on domain mapping it says ( http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/) :
The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes and plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and must still abide by our Terms of Service accordingly.”
So if I’m confused. I get that you can buy a domain and domain mapping with wp.com so the no advertising makes since but since I’m self hosted can I still not use ads if I try to redirect my wp.com blog to my new domain?? One of hte main reasons I got a domain was for ads so if I can’t do it with a redirect…then I can’t redirect, correct?
Thanks for any help,
The blog I need help with is kendrajkphotography.wordpress.com.
anyone have any answers?
Your question is a little hard to make out. Do you want to apply your new URL to your WordPress.com blog, or do you want to move your blog off WordPress.com to a new host and use the new URL there?
Just having a domain name will not allow you to have ads. The new AdControl program will: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/
Having just a domain, or a domain mapped to a WordPress.com blog will not allow you to host ads, because the website you have is at WordPress.com. You have to buy hosting somewhere for a website, install software (probably from WordPress.org) and then apply your domain to it.
I have gotten hosting and a domain from hostgator. I have downloaded the wp.org program and my new blog is all set up and everything from my blog here on wp.com is transferred.
Now I’m looking to get my blog at wp.com to redirect to my new blog that I have self hosted.
The only way I saw to do it was with the domain mapping that is $10/year correct?
And then I read the Before Upgrading disclaimer I posted above and got confused.
I know I can have ads if I am self hosted with wp.org but if I want to redirect my current blog to the new one…am i still allowed to have ads or not?
(does that clear it up?)
1. If you purchased a domain with host gator and want it to point to your wordpress.com blog then yes you will have to purchase domain mapping. (exp. you purchased example.com and want it to point to example.wordpress.com) When people type in example.com then they will go right to your blog at example.wordpress.com
2. If you purchased a domain with host gator and want it to point to your wp.org hosted blog then you will have to contact your hosts (exp. blue host, go daddy) technical support, then they will guide you through the process.
Hope this helps.
You will not be able to redirect this domain: http://kendrajkphotography.wordpress.com kendrajkphotography is a subdomain to wordpress.com and wordpress.com is registered and controlled by wordpress.
You want your whatever.wordpress.com blog’s URL to redirect to your Whatever.com blog, right? There is a way to do this:
raincoaster, yes. When people go to my blog here (kendrajkphotography.wordpress.com) I want them to be redirected and sent to my self hosted page (likeabirdblog.com)
I read the domain mapping and the redirection that you linked to. My question is about the declaimer that I listed above. If you follow the link in step 2 it tells you how to get domain mapping (mapping an existing domain) it has the disclaimer there.
If I get the redirect (by using the domain mapping) will I be allowed to use ads on my blog since I am self hosted or no? That’s what I’m confused about .
Domain-mapping means that you are pointing example.com to your example.wordpress.com blog which is hosted by wordpress.com and does not allow ads. (unless you have high traffic – Ad Control)
Redirecting your blog means that you are using a subdomain like blog.example.com to then point to your self hosted blog. With that said I believe you should have no problems using ads because you are now on a self hosted blog.
To be 100 percent sure you might want to send a quick email to support.
I’m currently running through a slightly similar issue with trying to get my blog redirected too, but I’m wondering more about whether once you do so, is the original blog then still held on WP servers, and if so, can you get info such as stats (older) also redirected? Also, if you decide you don’t want to have the blog kept on WP servers for whatever reason, how do you go about getting it deleted there permanently?
If you actually move the hosting off WordPress.com, you can’t carry the stats with you. Your WP stats, even on the new blog, will reflect two separate blogs.
You can, however, use any number of other stat counters that allow you to punch in a “start number”.
You can delete a blog by just going through your Dashboard. It’s scarily easy, but it IS permanent. Neither you nor anyone else can use that URL or contents afterward.
Oh great – thanks. Appreciate the additional info on the stats as I’d never have thought of using a separate counter other than the “standard” one. Much appreciated.
