domain mapping, domain is available but wordpress is taken

I want to register a domain, such as example.com. No problem.

I want to map it to wordpress, but there is already a blog by the name example.wordpress.com.

How would that work? If I pay for and register example.com, could I still map it to wordpress, even though there is an example.wordpress.com?

No worries; this question is for wordpress.com. I didn’t specify a blog address because I need some input before I sign up for a(nother) new blog. I hope someone has the answer so I can get’er done.
    Thanks.

I took y’all at your word and gave it a go! Went like a breeze. I thought I’d post here how wordpress handled it in case someone else comes up with this question. Knowing (example).wordpress.com was taken by someone else, I didn’t know how they’d handle it. I registered a new domain (example).com. When I mapped it to wordpress, instead of giving me (example).wordpress.com, they made it (exampledotcom).wordpress.com. An easy way around it, but I couldn’t find any documentation on it ahead of time.

Thanks for the encouragement. I actually did it right away; just get back to the forum now.
