Domain mapping from a different host and registrar
I want my bad websites .com domain name to show my new wordpress.com SITE and in the browser I want it to read the domain name without “wordpress” in it. Is this possible with domain mapping?
So far support has told me over and over that I need to update the primary domain to the .com site and then they did it for me. NOT what I want! I want all of my old traffic directed to my site.wordpress.com blog but read site.com in the browser.
The bad site is still hosted on yahoo. Do I need to un-host it there before I can use that domain name on wordpress? Please help! Been stuck on this all day.
The blog I need help with is westerntrackinginstitute.com.
Yes it is. See this support document.
In a nutshell.
1. Point your domain name at the wordpress.COM servers.
2. Wait about 12 hours for the propagation to be well underway to all the internet name servers.
3. Do the domain mapping here. Once you have done that, within a few minutes to a half hour, your blog here will be showing up with your domain name in the address bar. Anyone who puts your domain name into their browser will get to your blog. Do note that there will probably be some 404 errors since your various URLs here are going to be different from the URLs at Yahoo, but they will get here.
You don’t need to kill your old Yahoo site – when you do the domain mapping as the mapping progresses across the internet your visitor will just be directed away from Yahoo and onto WordPress.com. It can take 24 to 72 hours for all the changes to take place but the changes start usually earlier – there can also be some local caching problems that can hold onto the old site.
