Attempting to create domain. WordPress changed the url from “dontreadthis.net” to “dontreadthisdotnet.net.” Why, and how do I correct this?

The blog I need help with is dontreadthisdotnet.wordpress.com.

You don’t because nothing is wrong. Read on so you understand. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

See here if you already have a domain that you registered and purchased elsewhere. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

After you do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Notes: Your content stays exactly where it is. All that changes is the URLs and your visitors are seamlessly redirected from the original .wordpress.com URLs to the same content under the new domain URLs.

Dear timethief, thank you for replying. If you’ve answered my question, I can’t tell (I don’t have a background in computer programming). Are you saying that WordPress has NOT changed my selected url, that it’s only telling me it has? I have not as yet responded to the confirmation email, neither have I submitted payment information–because I do not want to confirm or pay for a url with the words “dotnet” added.

I am saying that in order to domain map to any domain URL there has to be an underlying .wordpress.com blog URL to map from. You did not enter one so the software provided http://dontreadthisdotnet.wordpress.com/
When the domain mapping is propagated throughout the internet that URL will redirect to the domain URL that you purchased.

I have not as yet responded to the confirmation email

    Do that now please.

neither have I submitted payment information

    Do that now please.

So once I respond to the confirmation email and submit payment, what will the URL be?

Yes but it will take up to 72 hours for the domain name change to propagate throughout the internet.

It has been 4 days (96+ hours) and the URL “dontreadthis.net” still does not exist, only “dontreadthisdotnet.wordpress.com”

    Something is wrong:

There is no domain mapping upgrade for dontreadthis.net.

I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

At this point I’ve decided to start over and set up a new blog site with a different title.

    Hey there!

You might have gotten confused about your WordPress.com blog address and custom domain. To clarify, each WordPress.com blog is given a free, unique address such as “http://dontreadthisdotnet.wordpress.com/”. Currently, this is where your blog resides and it is also where you may access its admin panel.

If you wish to use a custom domain such as “dontreadthis.net” for your blog, you may do so by purchasing a Custom Domain upgrade. The upgrade costs $18 a year and lets you register and own a domain name of your choosing.

To begin registering your Custom Domain, go to Store -> My Domains in your admin panel and click on “Register a New Domain Name”.

    http://dontreadthisdotnet.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

Enter your desired domain (e.g. dontreadthis.net) and go through the succeeding steps to complete the registration.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/

Afterwards, please be sure to set the new domain as your Primary Domain.

Let me know if you run into problems. Best wishes!

No, not confused. dontreadthis.wordpress.com was taken, so I opted for the $18 version, dontreadthis.net. What I got, instead, was dontreadthisdotnet.wordpress.com I’ve decided to start over with a different name. Thanks.

I’ve run into a new snag. I was planning on creating a new blog under the name Mitchellaneous. Problem is mitchellaneous.wordpress.com contains hardcore porn and bestiality. Looks like nothing has been posted since 2012. Is it possible to have that site removed? I write for church folks, among others, and do not want anyone accidentally going to that page.

I’m afraid that I’m not seeing the domain “dontreadthis.net” registered under your account. If you’d like to purchase the domain, please go to Store -> My Domains in your admin panel:

    http://dontreadthisdotnet.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

And go through all the steps outlined in this support page to register it:

Unfortunately, the site is owned by someone else and should it be removed, that will not free up the blog address so that another user may use it.

Sorry for intruding but seems like this is getting replies. I need help with my blog http://www.kenyanvoice.wordpress.com which I mapped to .com and when it expired it failed to renew although it was set on automatic renewal. when I tried to renew with my visa manually I was informed that my country (kenya) is not supported. my blog is not mapped now and I am losing my readers every day. Again I apologise to teem for the intrusion and I hope drusome and timethief will help, please. So what do I DO?
    thanks.

druesome, to clarify, I was not asking about acquiring the other person’s URL (mitchellaneous.wordpress.com); I was asking that their page be removed. It contains images of women having sex with animals and possibly child porn, which I assume are against WordPress policy. This should, I would hope, bother you!

Due to the possibility of someone accidentally visiting THAT page, I will not chance using the name Mitchellaneous, and will have to find another.

I’ll ask my team to take a look at the blog. Thanks for reporting it!

In the meantime, are you still keen on registering “dontreadthis.net”?
