If you have a domain purchased elsewhere and don’t want to transfer it then you can map it to a WordPress.com site instead by purchasing an upgraded plan.

You can build a site elsewhere with your domain. You can create a free site here at WordPress.com with a domain address ending in .wordpress.com or .home.blog or similar.
But to use your existing domain with a WordPress.com site requires a paid plan. -
Thanks for response. Not sure I fully understand your answer in relation to my problem.I have a domain name,3 in fact with the main domain”raystips.org”.which had wordpress installed at root level with the other two domains as, I believe,add on domains.I had already attempted to work out what to do and had made a start trying to install a theme,at that point I started to experience issues,including errors in trying to login.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated -
