    Otherwise, check engtech’s site: he’s the only one doing comparative analysis of WordPress templates, and he’s pretty thorough.

    I offered way back when…

    thanks I will check out engtech’s site…I do understand that the more tag gives you an option…but I don’t necessarily want the first couple of lines to be the excerpt that people see..sometimes my excerpts will come from the middle of the article so the more tag isn’t that useful for me

    That being the case I can save you some time by telling you right now that you will not find exactly what what you are seeking as a feature in any theme. The only choices you have are the <!–more–> tag and <!–nextpage–> tag. The latter is a wordpress tag similar to the <!–more–> tag, except that the codex says it can be used any number of times in a post and each will insert a “break” and paginate the post in that location. http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=5790&replies=19#post-37679

    @timethief …thanks for the headsup…I’ll investigate

    dare I ask what the point is of offering the “optional excerpt” field to fill out when writing a post? Where can that excerpt be used?

    WordPress is only 1 1/2 years old and some features yet to be rolled out. If anyone has found a work around I encourage them to post it.

    The only thing I can think of is to place teaser sentence or two from the body of the post at the very beginning of the post, maybe in italics, and then insert a more tag and commence the article.

    Here’s an example of what I mean:

    In 2006, spammers found new ways to evade sophisticated filters designed to keep spam to a minimum. The techniques include sending the dubious pitches as images instead of text to fool filters programmed to look for specific words.
    <!–more–>

    If you’re like most people who use e-mail, you’ve spent a lot more time lately deleting stock tips, cut-rate deals on pharmaceuticals, and sure-fire ways to enhance your mate’s pleasure. It’s estimated that spam accounts for nine out of 10 e-mails and costs the world economy about $50 billion a year in lost productivity, according to San Francisco-based Ferris Research.

    You want to do pull quotes from your own article, rather than grab them with the lede? TT’s suggestion is the only way I can think of to do that, and she’s also right that you’d need to format that differently from the rest of the post so people KNOW it’s a pull quote, rather than the first sentences of the post.

    Personally, if I have a grabby lede and want to give people some hints about what’s coming, I use the tags in a very deliberate way. If the article seems perfectly normal but the tags include Squid, Supernatural, and Religion, that will tip off your smarter readers that something weird this way comes.

    I still don’t understand what the ‘Optional Excerpt’ is. I’ve just put in some text, saved it, and there is no change to the page. How do I use it? How do readers access that extra text?

    How about trying the “more” tag on our preferred themes, if interested, and posting our results here so that we can have a short list of those themes that do not block the rss readers.

    The ‘Optional Excerpt’ is used by some themes as a preview. You’re probably not using one that uses the field. (I actually can’t think of any right off that are here)

    wood, the themes and the RSS feeds are seperate. One wouldn’t affect the other. The RSS feeds are generated by the underlying software.
