I see that there is a lot of advice in the forums and FAQs about how to have music play on your site, either by hitting a button or by embedding it, but how to I offer downloadable music?
A friend of mine is a musician and he has given me the rights to offer a free MP3 download on my site, but I can’t figure out the code.
Any advice would be great. This seems like it should be easy but, if you go to 10things.wordpress.com and scroll down to Lake Alaska, you’ll see I’m having some difficulty.
You need to host it somewhere first: try Box.net, people really like them and we have a box.net widget too for your sidebar. Once it’s up on the internet, just find the URL of the file. It will end with .mp3 of course and that’s what you need, not the URL of the page it’s on. Copy that and in your blog just post it as a link, either straight as-is, ie
and here’s a great song for you to download. Just right-click and save to your computer
OR you can change the link with HTML or the visual editor to something prettier.
Thanks raincoaster. I realized that my problem was with where I was hosting the file and not with my coding. Thanks for the Box.net recommendation. I was able to host my file elsewhere but that suggestion should be very useful to others who have the same issue.
You’re welcome. There are a lot of places that let you upload but not hotlink files; that was from back in the day when bandwidth was the most expensive thing.
