Duplicate meta descriptions, multiple tag errors
Google Webmaster Tools is showing 100+ “duplicate meta descriptions” and just as many “short meta descriptions” for my site.
Bing Webmaster shows a “multiple <h1> tags” error for several pages, and indicates this as a “high severity issue” in its SEO analyser.
I checked with the W3C markup validator, which reported 50 errors and 184 warnings.
How to go about cleaning this up? Thanks in advance for your response.
The blog I need help with is ldl100.wordpress.com.
Should add that on another thread, staffer @kraftbj said the GWT duplicate meta tag issue was being looked into; perhaps he can provide an update.
Then you ought to post into the thread kraftbj is already working in and has bookmarked https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/you-cant-add-meta-description-but-theres-another-way?replies=25#post-1380230
Thanks for the response. However, that thread is about adding meta descriptions, not about getting rid of duplicates. It also does not address the other issues I’ve brought up here.
Note that I left the modlook tag on this thread for Staff. Don’t worry when Staff address all the threads tagged for their attention that were tagged prior to this one they will respond to you in this thread.
Thanks for your help. Will wait on an answer.
We believe we’ve fixed the cause on this on our end, though, the warnings may continue to display for you until the next time Google crawls your site.
Thanks for your patience and please let us know if you have any questions. Thanks for using WordPress.com!
Great news…how about the multiple <h1> tags errors in Bing?
Like Google it might take a while before Bing will be crawl your site again. Sometimes search engines can take 4-6 weeks or more to update sites.
Please let us know if you need any further assistance!
Can someone help me with this
Some improvement with the duplicate meta tags issue in GWT (down from 100+ to around 15), but the “multiple <h1> tags” errors in Bing Webmaster have now nearly doubled since I first posted this topic.
Can you provide an update? Thanks!
Many themes (including the one you are using) that are coded in HTML5 use headings inside sectioning elements, and H1 tags for the first heading inside of each sectioning element. Here is a great explanation about having more than one H1 tag on a page:
Thanks for the response. I’ll assume this is also the reason the W3C validator is reporting so many errors. The main concern is impact on SEO; as I mentioned previously, Bing indicates this is a “high severity issue” in its SEO analyzer.
http://zuri.in/ has more 200 duplicate meta description errors on GWT! The number keeps going up! I have been eagerly waiting for some resolution to this post, but wordpress.com seems to be broken in this respect. There is some serious issue.
Short meta descriptions Errors = 120
Duplicate title tags Errors = 92
Duplicate meta descriptions = 200
The worst part of seeing these errors is that there is no help available from wordpress.com to indicate any way to resolve this issue.
Each site is a bit different on what could be the cause for errors like that. In your specific case, without seeing the warnings directly, it appears that your tags and categories do not have descriptions written for each. In the absence of a specific description, the site’s tagline is being used, which would be a duplicate.
You can edit your categories and tags via the Posts->Categories and Posts->Tags pages within your site’s dashboard.
Your date-based archives will continue to use the tagline as the meta description; however, as it’s better for both you and the user for folks to land on specific posts (instead of a date-based archive), it’s not an issue.
You suggested to fix “it appears that your tags and categories do not have descriptions written for each.” I did that 4 days ago – and errors have only crept up :)
“In the absence of a specific description, the site’s tagline is being used, which would be a duplicate.”
How do I add a specific description?
“Your date-based archives will continue to use the tagline as the meta description; however, as it’s better for both you and the user for folks to land on specific posts (instead of a date-based archive), it’s not an issue.”
I didn’t understand what you just said :)
Thank you in advance for helping me solve this issue.
