No you don’t need an upgrade to do any of those things.

Use the step by step learn wordpress.com tutorial that linked to the bottom of your Admin page at http://learn.wordpress.com

    1. default sidebar display (widgets)
All widgets are both installed and removed here > Appearance > Widgets. Every theme has a default sidebar display that appears to contain actual widgets but doesn’t. When you select widgets you want to use one by one, click to open, configure, click “save” and “click” close on each you override the default display. If you do not want any widgets at all then place a text widget at the top of the sidebar, click to open, enter no title or body text, then click “save” and click “close”.

    2. front page 404 (page not found) error
That error message can easily be addressed. Publish a post and it will be gone. By default the front page of your blog displays all posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. The 404 (page not found) error message on the front page of the blog appeared because the Admin of the blog deleted the placeholder Hello World post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/not-found/

    3. enable disable comments
You can override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any individual post or page.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

Any existing posts or pages will need to have comments disabled manually via editing. You can use the bulk edit feature in the all posts and all pages screen to make that quicker.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/edit-pages-screen/

Note: By default, new blogs on WordPress.com will have the Discussion hidden. You can reveal it by clicking on Screen Options http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ on the top right corner of your Admin page, and checking the box that says Discussion so the module is included. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules

    4. custom menu

Among the most common misconceptions is that bloggers fail to understand is
    (1) there is only one page we can post to in any blog and
    (2) the static pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ they create do not automatically update.

Only the dynamic pages like Categories, Tags and Archives created by the software when we publish a post we that we have assigned Categories and Tags too will update automatically update with new posts.

By default the front page of the blog is the post that displays all posts in your blog. Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.

We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can create a custom menu and add the dynamic categories pages into the custom menu.

    5. Hatch theme and galleries

The detailed Hatch theme description is here:
    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/hatch/

The Hatch them uses featured images to make a grid gallery on the homepage, and to show your images in a special location on each post page. You insert your image as a featured image in a post, NOT into the text area of your post.

You can read more about featured images here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/

If you choose any of the Gallery types other than the slideshow, your images will open in a full screen carousel view. Here are some links with more information:

Hey !! Thanks for your advise. If you see http://elvinsfineart.wordpress.com/# I actually deleted the nothing found message, but a white shaded box shows up on the left right below the header image and the post I put I do not want it to show either and it shows when I put the mouse cursor on top of the box. I wrote Contact as a test. Any suggestions, I just wanted it to disappear plain white.

    Thanks.

I tried deleting all those widgets Meta Archives, Site Admin etc. and it did not work. Is there a specific way to do it ??

    I’m novice in this.

    Thanks.

Unless you insert a featured image in each post you will get the gray box.

You go to the theme description page which I linked to above an follow the instructions you find there. The detailed Hatch theme description is here: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/hatch/

If you still have questions then you read the threads for the Hatch theme to find the answers to them.

But will the post still show, because I do not want anything to show. I just do not want my blog to look like a blog. I will try now.

Please try to become self sufficient as quickly as possible. Please always read the information at the links Volunteers provide and work through the instructions before posting again. That’s my very polite way of saying what would be said in other blogging forums this way: “read the freaking manual!”.

well, i’ve read the manual completely through, however, i need some help in order to combine the both post and page modes. i’ve accomplished such a task, but i can’t trace the way back how i did manage that. i posted 2 times, then i put the both posts on a page nicely and made a menu tab. now, i can access that page through the menu “Theorie” linked to the 2 posts on the page! please, can’t you tell how should I accomplish all that again?
