Editing – inserting new posts further down the list of recent posts

  • Can I edit the order of recent posts and also insert new posts somewhere down the list of recent posts? I have set up a new blog and have been copying into it a lot of old diary material from word documents that I want to put on line as a blog. It is accumulated history, even though it is all being put into a blog now. I have made all the posts sticky so the history is evident from the ‘recent posts’ list. However, I have continued to find new documents from my Word archive that I want to load. Putting them up as new posts now gets them out of chronological order. I can’t find a way to put it right. Is it possible to insert posts further down an existing list? Is this something that can only be done on custom blogs?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • That’s not a good idea at all. Sticky posts are not meant to be used for that purpose.

You can create posts and falsify the datestamp in the Publish module. if you do that then when published they end up where you want them to be.

Microsoft Word is a word processing program that’s not compliant with web standards. The result of copy and pasting from Microsoft Word into the Tiny MCE editor in WordPress blogs can be unexpected, and contain a lot of formatting code that’s not compliant unless you know how to use the built-in features in the Visual editor for using Word cleanly. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text

Note you need to click the kitchen sink icon #15 at the end of Row 1 to have Row 2 appear. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-1

Go here and enable this > Settings > Writing
    Formatting
_ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
    “save changes”

I recommend using Windows Live Writer for posting to your blog > http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/windows-live-writer/

  • Blogs are essentially a reverse chronological order publishing tool and you cannot change this order on a free hosted WordPress.com blog.

Readers arrive to read our most recent posts. In the case of my blog that means they don’t have to slog through over 800 posts to locate the most recent one.

See here for the option of creating a book-like structure > http://en.support.wordpress.com/write-a-book/ Perhaps that will work for you.

You could use a single sticky post as an index page > http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/#sticky-posts

  • Thanks – very helpful. Will try your suggestions.

  • You’re welcome and best wishes.
