My domain was automatically renewed about a month ago. Now I received an email asking me to pay $75 for some search engine registration. The email comes from (email redacted) which sounds like a dodgy name anyway.
If this is from wordpress, then could you please let me know how to unsubscribe from it so I’m not automatically charged (the email isn’t very clear and keeps repeating that I have to decide by the 6th of September).
If this isn’t from WordPress, then I’m very worried because my billing information and everything else seems to have been accessed.
Not sure how to contact staff about this either, so if anyone knows anything, please let me know.

Hi there. Those search engine registration emails is a common scam. Mark it as Spam, and if you want and know how, report the website who sent it to their hosting provider as well as this is actually illegal and should be against the terms of use for all reputable web hosts.

There is no need for any website to register with a search engine for a fee. Self-hosted websites need to submit a sitemap to search engines for the best SEO, but on this is done for you, and for free. You can see these links for more information:

As for your information, when you bought the domain you had to provide all your contact details. Unless you bought the privacy upgrade as well, those details are kept on a public online database that anyone can view. It works like this for ANY domain, no matter where you buy it. Scammers like these often use that database to get your information and trick you into providing them with your credit card details, social security/identity number, etc.

If you don’t want your information to be visible like that you’ll need to add the privacy upgrade to your domain. You can do that from the Domain Management page in the dashboard:
