“Error establishing a database connection”

I keep getting this error message when trying to setup my site. I’m not using a wordpress.com site, but have my own site name. I’ve uploaded the wordpress pkg. to my ftp, connection was established and everything. I then changed the wp-config.php to have my db name, db password, and db address.
When I try to launch the site mysite.com/wp-admin I get the “error” message. triple checked the info on database to make sure it’s correct, but still get the error.

once I setup my database, I uploaded the wordpress download to my ftp client (using cyberduck). I then changed the wp-config.php file’s name and DB info according to instruction.

    Any thoughts or tips?
I’m a total noob and this is my first time setting up a site by myself.
