Export Blogroll from my blog which is hosted at

  1. I have a weblog hosted by Now I am moving to my own domain and I want to export everything into my new wordpress weblog (hosted by myself). I exported/imported entries, comments and post categories. However the blogroll, links and link categories are not exported.

    I have read about OPML files and also found some plugins in the net to allow me to export blogroll from a wordpress account, but they all require full control over the account. Can I do the same over my limited weblog?

  2. Blogroll- you can export your blogroll links out at
    `http://mydomain.tld/wp-links-opml.php’ (You must change “my domain.tld” to your own url, of course.)

    Open that exported blogroll (links) xml file in a plain text editor like NotePad and save as a *.txt file. Be sure you are using a plain ext editor and then import the *.txt file you saved into your new blog at dashboard -> blogroll -> import Links.

    Important Note: The blogroll (links) xml file needs to be saved as a *.txt doc in a plain text editor like Notepad. This is because if you were to save it as a text rich text document using for example Microsoft Wordpad or Word (horrors!) those programs would add in all kinds of garbage like fonts and unusual html formatting code that mess will it up for what you’re doing here.

  3. Thanks for the cool info. I managed to save my OPML file successfully and I DID used notepad, to avoid any unwanted hidden/unhidden characters. But still when I try to import the locally saved .txt file from the link manager IMPORT option, I get the following error:
    XML error: no element found at line 1

    Inserted 0 links into category 2. All done! Go manage those links.

    The content of the file is also like this ( I kept only one link here):

    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <!-- generator="wordpress/MU" -->
    <opml version="1.0">
    <title>Links for Z-LOGS</title>
    <dateCreated>Tue, 03 Apr 2007 21:38:54 GMT</dateCreated>
    <outline type="category" title="Blogroll">
    <outline text=""H" wants To Learn English" type="link" xmlUrl="" htmlUrl="" updated="" />

  4. I'm sorry this didn't go smoothly for you. :( It looks like you're going to need help to sort this so it's feedback time.

  5. Known issue: trac ticket

    Feel free to point thta out to staff when you send in a feedback.

  6. Thanks! I finally uploaded the links to my host and used the HTTP import. It worked fine. But I think the issue of importing from a file shall be fixed in future.

    Thanks all.

  7. Thanks for returning and letting us know how you sorted this.
    On my behalf, you're welcome. :)

    drmike will get back to you when he's online tomorrow.

  8. But I think the issue of importing from a file shall be fixed in future.

    Agreed but you're preaching to the choir. Did you send in a feedback like was suggested pointing them to the open trac ticket?

  9. Dear drmike, actually the that you mentioned helped me to solve my problem. Also I noticed that the bug fix is apparently in the queue, for the next releases.

    Thanks for your support.
