Fauna Beta 5 update

  1. think "Fauna Beta 5" deserves to be updated.

    besides it has pioneered the way for 'Custom Header Image URL' (Beta 2, Mar'06), there are heluva new features added since Beta 1 release, including full localization attempts (currently French, German).

  2. yes, please update it! i really like the theme but i can't use it because i can't even use widgets in it. =(

  3. I am sure when this crisp, feature rich but lite (and hence robust) theme made by professional web-designer gets upgraded up to its widgetized version, it shall become one of the most popular theme on .com

    current theme options include (but not limited to):

    * custom header image (URL)
    * custom header height (px)
    * custom header width (px)
    * custom sidebar position (left, right)
    * custom background image (URL)
    * custom background color
    * 'About this blog' text input form
    * comments on a page

  4. Maybe they're waiting for it to come out of beta?

  5. Doubt it. They have other themes listed a Beta and i even think there's an alpha in there. :)

  6. dunno, it has already been adopted when it was just Beta 1 and NP. I don't think that Regulus was in less beta when it was updated to support widgets.

    Joen Asmussen (theme author) said: "I do not expect to make any further huge changes to a future release, only bug-fixes, adjustments and cleanups".

    PS btw, although .com itself doesn't have an 'Alpha' label sticked to, I can't see that anybody would be waiting for it comes to at least Beta stage.

  7. Judging that by the number of requests for template customization I see on the forum the Fauna Beta 5 features you list are IMO very desirable. What's not to like about:
    current theme options include (but not limited to):
    * custom header image (URL)
    * custom header height (px)
    * custom header width (px)
    * custom sidebar position (left, right)
    * custom background image (URL)
    * custom background color
    * 'About this blog' text input form
    * comments on a page
    I'm adding my name to those who want to see this template added. I note that there's just one thing that would make me jump up and down with joy is it were added and that would be a side-blog with updating and linking capacity.

  8. afraid that so called 'side-blog with updating and linking capacity' is more a matter of an apropriate plugin than a theme one (if I correctly understand what this feature really is about).

    thanks for your support of this theme, timethief. I suspect that only votes submitted via 'Feedback' are counted for whatever (unknown) reasons in this case...

  9. This sounds more like an "idea" thread than a support issue that'e why I would feel strange about sending it in as a feedback.

  10. Matt and crew have stated that theme requests should be sent in via feedback as that's how they keep track of requests. It's fine.

  11. I sent my request through feedback. Having the capacity to change the background colour and the header colour would delight me. I strongly prefer darker autumn background and header colours like rust, gold and deep green. Washed out pastels may appeal to other people but they do nada for me.:D

  12. hello timethief,

    does it look similar to what you've refered as a 'side-blog'?

    Due to popular demand, I added another special category: Sidenotes. To do this, I renamed the previous “Sidenotes” category to “Asides”.

    Now it works like this: “Asides” or “Dailies” are small posts in the main post-list, while “Sidenotes” are relegated to the sidebar.

  13. otions - you have blown me away! WOW! I'm guessing that you don't really appreciate how much time and effort it took a newbie like me to read all that computerease let alone to try to comprehend all that information expressed :P.
    Obviously you have completed a tremendously HUGE Fauna Beta 5 project update that was all chronicled chapter and verse at the site you sent me to.
    So this is what I don't quite get about the "dailies" or "asides". What I couldn't ascertain was whether or not the changes would allow for comments.
    What vivian paige and I are looking for is a "sideblog" that has the same linking and commenting capacity as the main blog has. To understand what I mean suppose you had a lead story on your blog on global warming. Then in your sideblog you could have related shorter stories on for example sea level rises, migration pattern changes, sea level ice melt. Some folks with an overall grasp of the global warming big picture may comment on the main blog article. However, there may be others who only grasp onto one of the smaller reports that they can relate to and witness in their own lives and choose to comment on them.
    There may even be some occasions when the small stories in the sideblog/aside/dailies may be not be directly related to the main blog entry. If we get comments on the small ones like those this will in turn prompt us to recognize in advance what the next looming issue may be. Then we know exactly where to focus our research and whom to interview.
    Over time with this capacity and assuming we do get readers who will leave comments our blogs can then become more interactive. In fact over time the readers who leave comments will be defining their issues and hence the nature of "the" blog will become more theirs than it is ours, if you know what I mean.
    I hope vivian reads this so she can give her input to you as well. As we don't have a designated lounge this kind of communication is difficult. P.S. I found the site where Fauna had been tweaked with a red (flash) moving banner and a black background - it was cool. What I'm looking for is a rust coloured header, a cream coloured background and deep green or warm brown fonts. Now IMO that would be super cool.

  14. [wow, you're typing fast. bet you've been taking typewriting lessons ;-)]

    as, you may have probably noticed there's a whole forum dedicated to the Fauna.

    the sunburntkamel (btw, he has a blog as well) seems to know Fauna very much better than me (I've just tested v4 on my host to be sure it works, sorry).

    and, at length, I think you can ask Joen himself about sideblog details (if you will, would you please, ask him if the Fauna is ready enough to be upgraded on .com and chances we ever will see it here). TA

  15. timethief - I think you have explained it well. To see a sideblog in action, take a look at this blog. It looks like he is using

  16. vivian - thanks for responding. I went to the site you provided and read the documentation. It seems that what's expected is thet only 1-2 sentences would be entered into the sideblog but I was thinking in terms of 1-2 paragraphs.
    options - I wandered around Joen's site clicking here there and everywhere but I could not find a place to leave an enquiry regarding Fauna and requesting the sideblog plug in be part of it.I'm surprised that someone "in the business" wouldn't have a contact page or box. Could you please contact Joen?

  17. I beleive Joen's contact page is over there. besides, there's a possibility to leave a comment on a 'Beta 5' entry.

    PS have you had a chance to skim through a Fauna forum's entry I referred above?

    PPS (another wpMU powered site) has an updated Fauna with widgets. so, it's definitely working with wpMU.

  18. options - yes, I have read the entire forum notes on this twice. The truth is I find the back and forth dialogue very confusing to follow but it seems to me that at this point that Joen says there already is a "sidenotes" and "asides/dailies" capacity in Fauna Beta 5. However, if you tell me that's not correct and I have misunderstood then I won't be surprised because the whole issue is giving me a headache. I could hardly focus on the blog with the black background even after I increased the font size and try as I might I couldn't see anything that I would call a "sideblog" or "sidenotes" there.
    I find all blogs that lack a distinct contrast between a dark background and the font used a challenge to read and I do not have poor eyesight.I wear glasses only for reading. Well to a dark background add the preference for teeny weeny itsy bitsy blog font sizes and I become really SNARKY. I will *NOT*read whatever is in that kind of blog. I get pissed and click out.
    So assuming that whatever "sidenotes" are called that they can be included in any blog template and that "sidenotes" do have a capacity for comments to be left then I'm for them.
    If however what's required is gaining some kind of technical expertise when it comes to inserting plug-ins then you've lost me. That's what I assume web host services do for their clients. I'm just a writer who wants to blog. My last entry on summarized my newbie struggle to understand what RSS feeds were and how to use them. My next newbie article will probably be on my take on "designing the perfect blog for me". [Sigh. I'm feeling overwhelmed and witchy.]

  19. oh, yes "One picture is..." here's an example I happened to find. see this guy's small entries on the sidebar -- that's what I think 'Sidenotes' is about -- instead of being placed on the home page they go directly to the Sidebar.

    as far as I could understand all technical expertise is just:

    "For sidenotes, create a category called 'Sidenotes'.

    Whenever you make a post that you want to appear as a sidenote, file it in that category."

    et voilà tout.

  20. Yes! This is what I meant by a "sideblog/sidenotes/asides" or whatever with comments. You use a headline to grab attention. You write a one or two paragraph introduction with a hook followed by "more" and link it to the whole post. Yes, this template (isn't it Fauna?)would work well for me, except for the old lady pink honeysuckle or whatever that flowering branch is in the header:P. In fact I remember seeing this page before so I believe you did show it to me at the beginning of our conversation and that the header can be changed. Am I right? P.S. Thanks for being so long suffering and patient with me. I do appreciate that babysitting newbies is probably not your idea of a good time and you'd probably be too polite to agree with that statement. :D.

  21. yep, sure this is exactly an example of the latest Fauna.

    header image/size and page background color/image can be changed through 'Theme Options' pane.

    ps NP

  22. Now we're cooking with gas![I'm starving and my animals are looking at the windows plaintively wondering when lunch will arrive.] Catch you later.:D

  23. So I'm not too crazy about Fauna but the way the sidebar/sidenotes is implemented is what I'd like.

  24. I love the Fauna theme and I'm going to use it once it's updated because I need to have me links on me sidebar! :D At least I need the "categories" and "archives" links. But I've already sent a feedback on this, and I think Matt and the gang will get to it when they find the time. I see that they have already added tons of themes this week, so since they're in such a theme-mood, I'm hopeful :D

  25. Hello,

    I am the author of the Fauna theme. Thank you for the kind comments here.

    I got an email about the discussion going on here, and was asked to clarify how the "special categories" work.

    First of all, take a look at the screenshot here:

    Basically, without the use of plugins, Fauna has a few built-in features, especially with regards to categories.

    It works this way: create a category with a special name. Once you've done this, simply file a post in that category, and the Fauna theme will treat it differently based on what category you filed the post in.

    - File a post in "Asides" or "Dailies" category, and the post shows up in the main list of of chronological posts, but with a smaller layout.

    - File a post in "Sidenotes", and the post will show up in the sidebar, complete with permalink and comments link.

    - File a post in "Noteworthy", and the post will get a small "heart" icon that links to all posts filed in the noteworthy category.

    Visit the screenshot link earlier and hover over the main area to see how each category looks.

    With regards to Fauna and, this is not something I am personally in control of. I was not asked whether I wanted Fauna beta 1 to be included on, but was pleasantly surprised that it had been adopted. The team is of course welcome to include Beta 5 or later releases.

    Currently the roadmap for the remaining development of Fauna is this:

    * RC version
    Will fix bugs in Beta 5. I do not expect new features to be added. Only cleanups and optimizations.
    * Final version
    Will fix bugs in RC.

    I suppose the WP team might be waiting for the final version since it's "near". That said, I think there are a few changes that need to be made in order for a theme to be ready -- I could make these changes if someone would tell me what these needed changes are... this might make it easier for the admins.

    Finally, I don't think "built-in" support is needed for the Live Preview plugin... it should work just fine with beta 5... just upload and activate.

    Hope this clarifies things.

  26. hello joen,

    thank you very much for the such a detailed reply and a great theme you made.

    now I'm eager looking forward for the moment when someone provide you with details needed (if there are any), so that all users could finally enjoy this nice theme.

    admittedly, the last bunch of new meddling themes which by pure accident occurred right after this thread has begun being actively discussed, makes me feel that, unfortunately, an updated Fauna hardly ever be available on .com, as well as some other advanced themes (like 'K2' for instance).

  27. If necessary, a "watered down" version of Fauna could be provided... like Beta 1, but with a VERY basic options page, and all the html/css bugs fixed.

    I have NO idea how long it would take to make such a Fauna MU, but I don't see why it couldn't be made.

  28. i don't know how my name got thrown in here, but that's cool.

    i know a thing or two about designing themes, but fauna is all joen. i jut hang out in the fauna forums cos i like using the theme.

    beta 5 would be a fantastic addition to, but i'm happy to wait for a final release. every release joen puts out is like manna from above, so i'm confident that the RC's will be much improved.

  29. hello Joen,

    while adding a basic support of standard .com widgets (specially Category and Archive ones) and (optionally, for right-handed persons) a custom 'Sidebar Position' option, would be of much help in navigation and a general usage of Fauna Beta 1 (so, that .com folks could finally start using it and get the gist of this theme), frankly, I'm not sure whether it worth to put any efforts into the special 'Fauna Lite .com edition'.

    admittedly, yet I haven't undergone Fauna a thorough testing, Beta 4 seemed worked perfectly for me right 'out of the box' back in April, when the sunburntkamel has told us about 'Custom Header Image' could be implemented as theme option and gave a link to the Fauna as an example of the first theme which did it.

    also, positive Fauna usage experience makes me beleive that Fauna is already 'quite a MU'.

    so, as a sunburntkamel, I am 'happy to wait for a final release' too, though being a .com user (i.e. already a beta-tester by the fact), personally I would as well be happy to test a beta version of the widgetized Fauna had I any chance to.

    ADD: there are also amusing creative things like a Fauna Live people make inspired by the Fauna.

  30. I really appreciate the fact that joen came to the forum and described his theme so well to us. It's important to someone like myself who do not speak computerease is able to directly communicate with designers.

    "A watered down version" does not sit well with me and I do not recommend making such a request.

    I am new to this computer and blogging world. I do not understand the structure or the way things operate. If this matter were in the political arena or the the environmental arena then what would happen at this point is that one of us (options) or a small committee (options and sunburntcamel) would write up a draft forming a concise appeal to "the powers that be" and listing the how the design would be able to better suit blogger needs than the selection of themes currently avaialble as well as emphasizing the designers willingness to meet the needs.

    I believe very strong points that could be made are that Fauna Beta 5 meets these needs without the need for "plug-ins"; that it's "user freindly" particularly easy for newbies to use(choice of category is all that's required to put what we write where we want it to be); that it is "customizable" and many bloggers desire the ability to customize their blogs; that it has side-bar with commments capacity which some bloggers have expressed a strong desire for; that early versions of the theme already have developed a following of happy users; that those bloggers currently using it and others are eager to see its upgrade and Beta 5 release; and, that the designer is willing to do the work to accomodate the needs expressed.

    Once the draft is worded it could be posted and circulated. Suggestions for additional grounds for strengthening the appeal and amendments to wording could be invited from all bloggers who are interested. A final copy of the written formal appeal would be produced and posted and circulated requesting that those bloggers who choose to support the appeal become formal signatories.

    Thereafter the appeal would be sent to "the powers that be" who will respond indicatiing any sticking points they have or requirements they would like to see met. At this point negotiation takes place and a satisfactory conclusion is reached.

    I repeat I do not recommend that "a watered down version" ever be a starting point for negotiations of any kind in this matter or in any others.

    We have good grounds to request an upgrade, we have a willing designer, and surely if we make a cogent case and appeal for the upgrade this will not fall on deaf ears nor will it be summarily dismissed.

    I believe we ought to proceed with confidence noting that if this process were to lead to a happy ending then it would become a model for other bloggers who wish to see their favorite theme up graded.

    One would think an organized and formal approach would be superior to the scatter gun approach of individuals making theme requests through feedback, don't you think?

    Respectfully, TT
