This is enormously helpful Rose. I find differentiating between the url and the website quite difficult. For example, I have a website/blog for my late husband which is ‘georgespenceley4.wordpress.com But I have a feeling it comes under the url ‘sylvienickels.wordpress.com’ Could you confirm that please.
Basically I just want one url ‘sylvienickels.wordpress.com’ with two blogs/websites: the one for my late husband as above, and one for me and my books. Could I leave the one for my late husband and create a new one for me, for example ‘sylvie.nickels-author.wordpress.com’ (assuming that isn’t already taken) which I could use for my books and communicating with others on writing and matters arising from it? If so I could eventually get rid of any others I have.
If this is possible, I might also need a temporary blog if I am to have another go at the Fundamentals course. I could call this ‘sylvienickels-fundamentals.wordpress.com
I seem also to have registered for Business website course but think I had better resign from that as I have taken on too much.
If I could simplify everything in this way it would be great, though I’d need to keep my sylviesowhatnext blog until I have copied the material I need to my new ‘author’ blog.
Do hope this all makes sense.
And thank you, thank you for your support.
    Best, Sylvie

    Hello Sylvie,

    Thank you. :)

I made this image for you, so you can use as your guide. Click here: http://take.ms/3pfSp – the one on top is the URL. It’s like the address for your website. And it’s unique – you cannot have the same URL for two different websites.

Probably the simplest way to illustrate this is – it’s similar to houses. Every house has an address – so the house is the website, and the address is the URL. You cannot have same address for two different houses – similar for websites, you cannot have same URL for two different websites.

In your WordPress.com account, sylvienickels.wordpress.com is a website under your account. You can have more than websites in your account, but they will all have different URLs. Therefore, your husband’s blog is not under the URL – sylvienickels.wordpress.com – it would be under your WordPress.com account. :)

The site address you’re thinking sounds good. :) Looking at your account – it shows that you have 3 websites. You can see the list of them by clicking here: https://wordpress.com/view
You can switch from one website you another by clicking Switch Site on the upper left hand side.

You can review these websites, so you can decide which to keep or if you want to add more. :) If you want to create a new site, you can click here: https://wordpress.com/start/ If you want to delete any of those sites, you can follow the instructions from this link: https://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/

I seem also to have registered for Business website course but think I had better resign from that as I have taken on too much.

You can find detailed Tutorials on WordPress.com from this link: https://learn.wordpress.com/

Please feel free to come back to this thread anytime you have further questions. :)

I think at last I begin to understand. So:

    1. I want to keep my late husband’s url, georgespenceley4.wordpress.com and develop it.

    2. After that I become confused since, as you tell me, under https://wordprpess.com I have three websites. I don’t need any of these (the georgespenceley one seems to be a duplicate of part of the above georgespenceley4 url; and the other two are obsolete). What I would like to do is have a new url: sylvienickels.author.wordpress.com and use that for a website transferring to it the text which is currently under sylviesowhatnext.wordpress.com
Is this possible? For example could I just change the name of sylviesowhatnext.wordpress.com to sylvienickels.author.wordpress.com and then edit it? After that I would follow the tutorials you mention and hopefully be able to leave you in peace!

You have been so patient and I am deeply grateful.
    Very best, Sylvie

    Hello Sylvie,

    1. I want to keep my late husband’s url, georgespenceley4.wordpress.com and develop it

    .

This website – georgespenceley4.wordpress.com – is not in your WordPress.com account. I believe this could be under your husband’s WordPress.com account.

The one that is on your account is – georgespenceley.wordpress.com. If you want to manage this site, please do the following:

    1. Login to your WordPress.com account.
    2. Click My Sites on the upper left hand side. It looks like this: http://take.ms/XTcoK
    3. Then click Switch Site underneath that. It looks like this: http://take.ms/WBZP9e
    4. Next click the site address you want to work on.

You will do the same steps if you want to switch to other sites in your account.

    2. After that I become confused since, as you tell me, under https://wordprpess.com I have three websites. I don’t need any of these (the georgespenceley one seems to be a duplicate of part of the above georgespenceley4 url; and the other two are obsolete).

The three websites that you see in your WordPress.com account are those that you have. You can review them again here: https://wordpress.com/view/

If you want to delete a site, you can follow instructions from this link:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/

What I would like to do is have a new url: sylvienickels.author.wordpress.com

sylvienickels.author.wordpress.com may not be allowed as it has too many dots, I’d suggest
    sylvienickels-author.wordpress.com

and use that for a website transferring to it the text which is currently under sylviesowhatnext.wordpress.com
    Is this possible?

Yes, you can change the site address, please see instructions from this link: https://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

**Please note to use: sylvienickels-author.wordpress.com use a dash instead of a dot between “sylvienickels” and “author.”

After that I would follow the tutorials you mention and hopefully be able to leave you in peace!

Please feel free to message anytime. :) I’m really glad to be able to help.

    Regards,
    Rose

Sorry, I thought I’d achieved it at last but in the process of following your instructions a further query arose.

I have succeeded in changing sylviesowhatnext.com to sylvienickels-author.com

However though it changed it and the change appeared on the page of my website, the old address remained in the web address (url). I explored further and found that I could change it on the url but am not sure that this means that it replaces sylvienickels.wordpress.com; or does it replace sylviesowhatnext.wordpress.com (which is one of the three site addresses currently under sylvienickels.wordpress.com? (How do people stay sane in the modern world?

They then said that if I changed the address they wanted a new password for that address, and that was OK but when they asked for another email address as well I chickened out. The thought of having different websites with different passwords and email addresses is too much for this old lady. Is this really the only way to do it?

I’ll do the tutorials once I’m sure I have the right web/blog address and the right access address for it.
    So many thanks,
    Sylvie

    Hello Sylvie,

I have succeeded in changing sylviesowhatnext.com to sylvienickels-author.com

Do you mean https://sylvienickels-author.wordpress.com ? I don’t see this being created.

However though it changed it and the change appeared on the page of my website, the old address remained in the web address (url).

Yes, because I think the change of site address was not successful. I don’t see this address – sylvienickels-author.wordpress.com

It will replace the site address you would be changing it from – you would be choosing that. Please note that sylvienickels.wordpress.com is a different and separate website from sylviesowhatnext.wordpress.com. They are in the same WordPress.com account. You can have more than 1 website in your WordPress.com account.

They then said that if I changed the address they wanted a new password for that address, and that was OK but when they asked for another email address as well I chickened out. The thought of having different websites with different passwords and email addresses is too much for this old lady. Is this really the only way to do it?

This sounds like you were on a wrong page, and you were creating a new account. I’m glad you didn’t complete it.

I could probably do this for you. :) I need to clarify some things, so I can do this.

    1. Is this the new site address you want to use? sylvienickels-author.wordpress.com
    2. Which site address from your account are you changing it from? https://sylviesowhatnext.wordpress.com or https://sylvienickels.wordpress.com You can click each of them to review which you want to keep, and just wanted to change the site address.
    3. After changing the site address of the one you’re keeping, what do you want to do with the other site? Delete?

It’s my pleasure to help. Please feel free to let me know if you need further assistance. :)

    Regards,
    Rose

Hi everyone! I recently started a blog and I would love the opportunity to share it with all of you. I have not told many people that I know personally, mainly because the content of my posts tend to be a bit personal. There is something a little terrifying about having my close friends, and family read my blog. I hope you all check out my blog and feel free to comment, like, and follow if you enjoy what you read! https://thoughtsnchatter.wordpress.com

Dear Rose – I’m not sure why you sent me this! I am seeing a local friend later today to finally sort out my web address. I think I want sylvienickels-author to be the one I keep, but I need to check whether I can then put on it the material I currently have under sylviesowhatnext !! I will write later.
    Best, Sylvie

Dear Rose – I think that at last I am clear about the website address I want to create and keep, As you pointed out recently:

“The site address you’re thinking sounds good. :) Looking at your account – it shows that you have 3 websites. You can see the list of them by clicking here: https://wordpress.com/view

    The three websites are: 1) sylvienickels.wordpress.com 2) georgespencley.wordpress.com 3) sylviesowhatnext.wordpress.com

I want to delete (1) because it is out of date; I want to delete (2) because there is a much fuller version of it under georgespenceley4.wordpress.com And I want to replace (3) by https://sylvienickels-author.wordpress com (in other words transferring the contents of (3) to the new web address).

Phew! When I have done this I will gradually expand the new website, adding images of the covers and more info about each of my books, how they came to be written, etc., and discussing and inviting comments on various aspects of the world today.

I imagine I would add a new page for each book and perhaps start an ongoing diary for the discussions.

I hope this makes sense to you too!

    Best of wishes,
    Sylvie

Rose, would you be able to create that new website for me, then I’ll get on with the tutorials and hopefully leave you in peace?
    So many thanks.

    Hello Sylvie,

    How are you? 😊

I created video guides for you, that you can follow. See below:

    Change Site Address: https://youtu.be/1LGSZlsgRBY
    Delete Site: https://youtu.be/MQ0QBPC691U

Please note that those are not yet websites, but a test website that I created for these video guides.

Let me know if you get stuck anywhere, and I’ll help you further. 😊

    #3039859

Hello Rose – Thanks, as ever, for this. I haven’t been quite well and, with Christmas coming, I think I must take a break from work. But I am still very keen to change this website and start promoting my books. When I feel better I’ll give it my best shot. So please don’t think I’ve given up!

If we’re not in touch before, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas. Where are you in the U.S.? It’s a few years since I was last there.

    Very best, Sylvie

    #3039860

    Hello Sylvie,

Yes, I should still be around when you come back. 😊

Oh, am not from the US, I am from Asia. You also have a wonderful Christmas!

    Regards,
    Rose
