This is a peer support forum. Staff monitor threads and weill answer questions from time to time but most questions are answered by Volunteers who are your fellow bloggers. We have no idea what wordpress.com management and Staff are considering. We have no information that’s not available to all other members. I have never heard of such a widget and you did not provide a link. I found it on the internet. This is part of what I found:
“Flattr was founded to help people share money, not only content. Before Flattr, the only reasonable way to donate has been to use Paypal or other systems to send money to people. … Flattr can be used as a compliment to accepting donations. Or to having advertising on your blog …”

Basically this seems to be yet another “like” button that Flattr members who pay to belong to Flattr can use to pay other Flattr members whose content they like for producing the content.

A plugin for wordpress.ORG blogs is available but there is no FTP access to wordpress.com blogs and that means no individual plugins can be installed by us bloggers.

What we do know is that only PayPal donation buttons can be placed on wordpress.com blogs. http://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/
What we do know is that we cannot have blogger initiated advertising on wordpress.com blogs.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/
What we do know is only certain types of blogs are allowed.
    http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/
What we do know is that certain codes are restricted and the software will strip them out to preserve security.

I suggest that you ask Staff about this widget.

As flattr (http://flattr.com/) generated some hype this week here in Germany and most influential blogs (netzpolitik.org) and even some newspapers (taz.de) promoted and started to use it.

So I just asked support whether we can expect flattr on wordpress.com and got the following reply:

We do not currently have any plans to implement a widget for flattr, but I have taken down your suggestion and we will keep it in mind as we continue to improve WordPress.com.

Which is useless information here, as we cannot add plugins. I appreciate that you want to help, but WP.com and WP.org are two different software systems. Please familiarize yourself with the differences and post in the appropriate forum, which in this case would be at WordPress.org.

I hope they implement the widget soon, I’d really like this feature.

I don’t read a Staff commitment to do anything more than consider the suggestion.

We do not currently have any plans to implement a widget for flattr, but I have taken down your suggestion and we will keep it in mind as we continue to improve WordPress.com.

As Flash is not currently allowed and as one has to pay a membership fee to belong to Flattr I wouldn’t be holding my breath if I were you. Basically this seems to be yet another “like” button that Flattr members who pay to belong to Flattr can use to pay other Flattr members whose content they like for producing the content.

Flash has nothing to do with it, it’s based on javascript or HTML. Second of all you don’t really have to pay a membership fee to belong to flattr, they will take a percentage of the money you transfer though. This could be a very good opportunity for the blogging community to get something back for the value they supply with their work.

Now i know nobody on here actually has the ‘power’ to change something, but I just wanted to set this straight.

Thanks for the clarity on both points. :)

But you can add a static flattr button with the Text widget to your wordpress blog.

That’s only one flattr button per blog but better than nothing.

Thanks for posting. Yes, we can capture an image and use either an image widget or text widget to display the image in our sidebar.
