Getting tons of spam comments lately despite akismet. Most seem to be originating from Facebook, and almost all of them contain a link to some junk site that is contained in a misspelled common word e.g: URL :
    Whois :
Hey Lee – thank heaven you found out your prlebom in time to take control of it. I totally understand your reflecting this experience back on to your writing.

Others are inane comments like “Superbly illuminating data here, thanks!” linked to some crap site like:

It’s getting to be a problem. How can I stop this???

The blog I need help with is

Akismet is constantly updating the lists (and lists and lists and lists) of spam it watches for. Sometimes a change takes a little time to catch up to, but you can help by marking it as spam so the system can recognize new spam faster.

Are these tons of spam comments finding their way into your legitimate comments waiting for your approval or are they in the Spam folder?

If the former, then as lettergrade said, please mark them as spam so that Akismet learns. You can use the Bulk Edit option in the Comments Dashboard

If the latter, then Akismet is doing its job. When in the Comments Spam folder, click the “Empty Spam” button to delete them.

They are coming in to legitimate comments — not being caught by akismet.

I have had the same issue for a while. I marked 20 of them as spam just this morning. Akismet doesn’t seem to recognize the pattern: a title that links to facebook, and in the body a misspelled word with a hyperlink.

It’s a race – sometimes Akismet wins and sometimes the spammers are ahead – mark the spam as spam – that helps Akismet learn

If you want to see how well Akismet is doing – look at the Akismet stats – you will find how many spam comments your blog is really seeing each day and have been caught

I’ve also had a huge uptick in spam comments coming in as legitimate. I’ve been marking them as spam. I guess it emphasizes to me how much I rely on Akismet and how thankful I am that I don’t normally get so many.

The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to blogs every day are spam. Spam comes in waves. There are human beings who get paid to post spam. There are robotic programs that post spam.

On the spam that Akismet catches on it takes only seconds to click “empty spam” and you don’t even have to click “empty spam” if you don’t want to. Akismet will maintain comments it has caught for 15 days from the time they were received, and then it will delete the comment automatically.

As has been indicated above Aksimet is a learning engine. If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it’s spam.

There is no such thing as eliminating all spam but Akismet works very well. For more information please take the time to read “5 things every blogger should know about spam” on this page Akismet: How it works
