Getting my old url back
I have an issue here! I changed my blog url from “peturaburrows.wordpress.com” to “istoryin.wordpress.com” and it created a whole other blog. Why?? Now I can’t get my first URL back. It’s saying that “peturaburrows.wordpress.com” is already taken. :( I’m apprehensive about doing anything else like “transfering” or deleting the current blog with hopes that that means that the name now becomes available…. because I might lose the url completely. Sigh. Please help. I am confused because the document said that if I checked the box I couldn’t use the URL again. But I didn’t check said box.
I just want my URL back. Please
The blog I need help with is istoryin.wordpress.com.
During the change of blog name process you were given the choice of keeping the old URL in addition to the new one or deleting it. In fact you had to click the button to have it deleted. See #6 in this support document on changing a blog address. In step 6 it says,
__Yes, please permanently disable peturaburrows.wordpress.com
If you check this box, you will not be able to use peturaburrows.wordpress.com again.
Sorry, there is no getting it back. You can set up another one with a similar name, or perhaps a variation on that name, but you cannot get that specific URL back again.
I should add, whatever you do don’t delete your current blog. It won’t get the old one back and you will then never be able to use that URL either
Nooooooo @ thesacredpath. I DID NOT check that box. This is why I am sooooo confused about this.
tandava, wow. I still don’t understand why, if I didn’t check that box, why are they saying I can’t get the odl URL back.
:If you check this box, you will not be able to use peturaburrows.wordpress.com again” I never clicked this! so therefore, shouldn’t I be able to use it AGAIN?
Your first URL (I hadn’t actually checked is not deleted. It is still there.
You don’t reregister the old blog. It should be accessible right from your dashboard by going to your username at the right end of the top grey admin bar.
I’m not clear on what you’re saying.
I had a blog url A.
Wanted to change url name for a bit so I changed it to url b
Wordpress then created a whole new blog using my url A, while leaving my content on blog with url B.
My issue is that I want the new blog – which has this url B – to go back to have url A. And to get rid of this new plain blog that wordpress created. So in other words, dump the blank blog but take my old url back with its content.
So the sacredpath, I know I can still access my first url, BUT the content is not on it.
The content is not on it because you did the “change blog URL” That means that blog A becomes blog B with all the content and a new URL.
If you want the content back on blog “A” then you will have to export the content from B and import it back into blog A. WordPress will not create duplicate sites.
If you just wanted a new blank blog B leaving blog A just as it was, then you should have just registered a new blog B.
BTW, do not leave duplicate content on two sites here. It will end up getting one of them suspended. WordPress does not allow duplicate blogs here.
No. not duplicate content. one is empyt.
So, how do I go about transferring the content – seeing how this is my only choice? :(
A relative question
If I export my content to blogger, Will my content be here as a copy or deleted from here?
Staff have deleted or suspended sites here which are simply duplicates of sites elsewhere. In order to avoid trouble, you may wish to set the site to Private, in which case staff will leave it alone and it acts like a handy backup.
Ok. I tried that @ theif. This comes up:
HTTP 500 Internal Server Error
The website cannot display the page
Most likely causes:
•The website is under maintenance.
•The website has a programming error.
What you can try:
Refresh the page.
Go back to the previous page.
Then, I refresh:
Sorry, there has been an error.
File is empty. Please upload something more substantial. This error could also be caused by uploads being disabled in your php.ini or by post_max_size being defined as smaller than upload_max_filesize in php.ini.
Ok. I tried again. Apparently, it worked. WordPress is “processing” my import and will send me an email.
