Getting rid of squares ...?

  1. When posting this copyright notice, I get a couple of squares in it:

which you can see if you scroll down to the image near the bottom of this entry:

Is there a way to get rid of them?

  2. Well, you don't have to look at the webpage, do you? They show up here, too.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of them? I wrote the copyright in MS Word to get the symbols, then cut and pasted into my blog and into this forum.

  3. I'm not sure I get what you're asking about - 'squares'?

    I don't see any?!

  4. I get Copyright-QuestionMark-AMPAS-RegisterMark-QuestionMark.

No squares. Squares are usually a sign of whatever font is suppose to be there, it's not installed on your own box.

Might help us help you if you tell what what's suppose to be there.

  5. Nothing is supposed to be there. No question marks, no squares. It should be copyrightAMPASregsitermark. I didn't leave blanks between them or anything, so I don't know why there would be anything else -- question marks or squares?

  6. How are you trying to do the character and registermarks?

  7. If you cut and paste from Word to the WordPress rich text editor you're going to run into a lot of weird stuff as all the Word garbage formatting gets converted.

Looking at that webpage, I see "©AMPAS®". I looked at the raw HTML and you have the characters, not the HTML entities for the non-ASCII characters.

What you should be using instead of that crap Word puts is
    &_copy; &_reg;

(get rid of the underscore between & and the first letter)

    © ®

  8. Thank you, engtech! That worked.

  9. Trust me when I say use something other than Word for composing your posts. Cutting and pasting from Word to WordPress does all kinds of things you probably don't intend to do.
