getting started questions, minor bumps in getting this blog off the ground.

I have a few questions about layout and widgets, etc. Is there really no way to speak to someone about my questions? Is there a live operator out there anywhere? I have questions about how to change the font color, what the hell is the difference between links and blogrolls, why a picture that I thought I deleted keeps re-appearing on my blog home page, etc. etc. I really need to talk to someone about a few vexing problems. I have gone to the forums and searched, but no one else has the same dumb problems or if they do, I am just not tech savvy enough to understand the answer. Sorry to be so old school, WordPress, but you know, talking is sometimes helpful…

The blog I need help with is

    There is no phone support.
On the bottom of your Admin page you will find a link to the Learn blogging Tutorial prepared by Staff. The support documentation is all found at the Support link which is also on the bottom of your Admin page.

have a few questions about layout and widgets, etc.

how to change the font color

These are 3 ways to change fonts on blogs.

    (1) Changing font families, colors and size in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page by coding into the HTML editor.

    (2) Changing font colors in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page using the #4 icon (Select text color – change the text color) in Row 2 the Visual editor.

    (3) Changing all font families, colors and sizes throughout the whole blog by purchasing an annually renewable Custom Design upgrade and using Typekit Fonts with Staff support.

Note: A few themes do provide for changing font color in the Blog Title and/or optional Tagline and/or links. In the majority of themes font changes to font families, colors and size in the blog title, tagline, menu, post titles, page titles, categories and tags, widget headings, comments, and links cannot be done without CSS editing.

what the __ is the difference between links and blogrolls

You create a Blogroll in your dashboard Links section. You display it in a Links widget.

why a picture that I thought I deleted keeps re-appearing on my blog home page

We can’t answer that until yoyur post a link to the blog in question. If you are referring to the blog you have with the Oxygen theme then there are threads that do provide the answer to every question about that theme

okay, so the answer, “is there a live operator,” is no, correct?

I know this sounds dumb to computer people, but it really is easier for some of us to talk to another human being in real time. It’s the difference between learning to knit from a book and learning to knit while your grandmother sits next to you and talks you through it. I wish WordPress had that option but I guess it doesn’t.

Because as kind and thorough as you were, Timethief, I really have done a lot of those things. For instance, I have added the widgets for both links and blog rolls, and both are on my blog (do I need both?) but neither includes thumbnail pictures of those blogs. Also, it lists all the blogs I follow, where I would like to only include the blogs that relate to the subject material of my blog. So, see? Stupid stuff like that.

But I guess I’ll go to the oxygen forum and flip through several pages of links there (which I have done in the past and which makes me dizzy after a few minutes). I’m only saying this cuz some web-saavy types really could make a killing by offering live phone help. Just sayin’.

The answer to “is there a live operator” is there is no phone operator, but the average response time in these forums is less than five minutes. Can you wait that long?

Some of us volunteers also offer paid custom support, like me, but we’re not free.

The Links widget IS the blogroll widget. You do not need both. And the Links widget will only include images if you upload images; not images of the blog posts, but buttons. Some blogs provide buttons, and some don’t. Our links widget doesn’t “draw” from the bloggers’ posts and create a thumbnail.

If you want to exclude blogs from your Links widget, you can delete them in the bulk editor on your dashboard under Links.

It’s not an issue of wait time. I’m just saying that Timethief went to a lot of trouble to cut and paste links that I had already tried and if I could talk to someone, I could have explained all that and then he/she would not have had to waste the time to do that.

I’m not implying that you guys aren’t doing your job. Its a fine and impressive job. It is just hard for some beginners to navigate all these links. And some of us, me for example, have really, really dumb questions that we’re not even sure we know how to fully explain what it is we’re trying to do.

All I wanted to know was is there a phone-in tech support option (like Go Daddy and Apple have). Thank you for your help and please don’t take offense.

If you have questions regarding the Oxygen theme please post them here and I will answer them.

Well, what’s your budget? I’m perfectly happy to Skype you but I’m not cheap.

I’m sure you’re not, Raincoaster. I’m buying lunch for a friend who has a blog and offered talk me through it without making me feel like an ass for asking. If that doesn’t help, I’ll get back in touch.

Thanks for offering, Timethief. It was very helpful to discover that a thing like “visual editor,” even existed. That was helpful, but I think you are right, I will need the Custom upgrade. Thanks for your help.

In case your friend does not tell you: DO NOT BUY the Custom Design upgrade until you’re comfortable editing CSS.

I am trying to change the color of my tagline without css, I have not purchased the upgrade so I am trying to do this without spending the extra money. Does anyone how I can accomplish this? Thank you!

I forgot to add that I am working with the Oxygen theme and I have searched the forum and I have not been able to find an answer. Thanks again

The short answer is, you can’t. Not without the CSS upgrade. You can change the colour of the body copy of posts, but not the Tagline or Titles as far as I’m aware, unless that’s one of the themes that has this under Theme Options.
