Gravatar image drop-down menu

  • This morning still, when I hovered my mouse over the Gravatar image in the right of the admin bar, the drop-down menu contained a list of all my blogs and I could create posts or reach the dashboard with a single click.

Now I see the drop down only contains a link to the My Sites page. So now I have to click that, wait for the page to load, and then make my way to my dashboard.

Is this an error or the latest attempt to force the My Sites page down our throats? FYI, removing functions while simultaneously making things more complicated, while a neat trick, cannot be considered an upgrade.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there!

Sorry you’re frustrated with our changes to the admin bar. We’re making these changes to create a unified experience across all parts of WordPress.com. We’re trying to change things bit by bit in an effort to cause as little disruption as possible for our users.

Are you currently referring to the grey admin bar across the top of your site as you would see here:

    https://kokkieh.wordpress.com/

You can access your dashboard by mousing over ‘My Sites’ in the upper left and selecting ‘WP Admin’. Let me know if that’s not what you meant and I can point you in the right direction. :)

  • Thanks for getting back to me.

Okay, so it has moved from the right side to the left. This is one of the cases where a ton of unnecessary forum threads could have been spared by announcing the change beforehand, but some things never change, right?

What is still a problem is that the My Sites drop-down on the left side works when I’m on a blog, but it doesn’t work on the forum’s admin bar. For me that is especially an inconvenience as I regularly visit my test blogs from the forum when answering threads from other users. If that drop-down menu could work in the forum the same as elsewhere on WordPress.com that would be great.

I quickly checked and it works from the support pages, so it’s only on the forum it doesn’t work.

In a related matter, is there a reason why the notification icon in the admin bar doesn’t appear in the forum? Just curious.

I can see how that would be frustrating. I’ll bring up the admin bar discrepancy with the developers and see what we can do.

I’ve noticed this myself as well. I’m not exactly sure why it’s set up that way, but I’ll mention it to the developers in the same vein.

We’re trying to make the admin bar consistent across all parts of WordPress.com, so the forums should be included in that. :)

  • Thanks for following up on this.

  • Alright. The awesome dev working on the admin bar changes noticed our thread before I even got a chance to mention it to her! She’s added the ‘Switch Site’ menu to the My Sites drop down in the forums. This will let you access your other sites and their admin functions.

I’m still following up with the group working on notifications about the lack of icon in the forums. I’ll let you know when I hear back from them. :)

  • Wow! That was quick. Please pass along my thanks to the developer.

While we’re on the topic of the admin bar, I’ve noticed none of the drop-downs in the dark admin bar are present in the blue admin bar in the Reader and New Dash, even though the same options of My Sites, Reader and Account Settings (Gravatar image) appear in both. Considering your earlier comment I wonder at this inconsistency, or is this something that’s in the works?

(Sorry if I’m being bothersome, but now my attention is focused on it I notice stuff. Just how my mind works ;-) )

  • Yep! This is something that’s in the works. I can’t find the finalized design right now to tell you exactly what the plan is, but eventually these separate admin bars will basically become the same. There will be slight differences between being on your own site and being on someone else’s. And being on WordPress.com pages logged in versus logged out. But overall the admin bar will be much more consistent. :)

I’m more than happy to answer any other questions you have. I’m still chatting with the developers about the notification icon in the forums admin bar.
