Help Making a Drop Down Menu Text Filter

  1. lightsockettendrils

I'm sorry if this is answered somewhere, but I have no idea what I'm doing, so I don't even know where to look. I'm new to WordPress, I don't understand what functions are, I don't know where all these them and plugin files are located, and I know very little code.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, here's what I would like:
I want a list of text (pretend it's all the professional basketball players). I want a drop down list/menu, or set of them, that can narrow down the list by category. For instance, one drop down menu has a list of all the teams, and then the next one is the positions or perhaps years played or whatever. The first menu selection should narrow down the list of players quite a bit, and the second should thin it out even more, resulting in only the items (players) that match the criteria from both menus.

What I'm looking for, if you would be so kind, WordPress community, is step by step instructions on how to make this happen, as I have no idea where to even start (hence why I'm here). Is there a plugin that could do this? Do I need to code something? Where would I even put that code? Is there a website that could teach me this? Is there a better option that could accomplish what I'm looking for?

Thank you so much for your time and answers!
