how do I compress the file size of existing photos on my site?

I have uploaded a lot of photos to my blog over the years and have only recently realised they should have been compressed before uploading to reduce the file size.
Is there a plugin I can use to do this? Or do I have to delete each photo, compress them and re-upload them??

The blog I need help with is tinkerbelladventures.wordpress.com.

As far as I know you can’t do this “in bulk” on your WordPress.com site, or even “compress” images in situ …

Some tools that can be used to reduce file sizes – https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/

Or another option if you have $99/year burning a hole in your pocket, would be to upgrade to the premium plan, which includes, you guessed it – more storage …

No 3rd party plugins can be installed by users on WordPress.com sites. https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/

In order to resize and optimize in bulk, as Don said, you would have to use an image optimization program. And then you would have to replace each existing image with the downsized and optimized image.

That’s a lot of work given the number of photos you currently have.

For the theme you are using, Twenty Ten, your images don’t really need to be wider than 640 pixels (the maximum width of the theme’s content container), but you may want to consider using the Gallery’s Photo Carousel to display your images larger (currently you are linking to Media Files) and then 1024 pixels wide/high is a good size to aim for.

    See more about that here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/gallery/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/media-settings/#image-gallery-carousel

I noticed you have a flickr widget in your footer. Another possibility is to link your individual images from flickr, but you can’t use those images in a Gallery feature or as a Featured image. Here’s more on that: https://en.support.wordpress.com/images/flickr-photos/

Let us know if you have further questions on any of that.

@justjennifer, thanks for adding to for me :)

The previous pay-for-what-you-use upgrade path was superior, so if you can save yourself $99/$79 and take the time to reorganise and have a good clear out … which reminds me, I’m at 97% I think …
