How to break up long blog

  1. I started my blog couple years ago and it is now too long. How do I make it into separate parts .... 2016, 2017, 2018, etc. This is all overwhelming to me! I still use the free version.

The blog I need help with is trip2016site.wordpress.com.

  2. Hi there,

You can archive your blogs and make use of archive widget or archive shortcode
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/archives-widget/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/archives-shortcode/

Hope that helps and let me know if you have any questions.

    Thank you.

  3. Lamrishaan, can this be done in the free version of WordPress? On my page, I don't see the links mentioned in the first widget choice.

  4. Hi

If you can find the widget in the links above, you may think of choosing a new theme with new options

Go to 'My Site' ==> Themes and you will find new themes with new features like the one you are looking for

    Regards,
    Skobraf

  5. Hi there, just adding something to the discussion.

If all your posts are on the same site you linked to above, the WP software has already created archives for you; you just need their associated URL. All WordPressdotcom sites have access to these archives including free sites.

Besides using archive widget and shortcodes, you can also add custom links to a Navigation Menu widget and add links that will point to your entries for each year:
    All posts from 2016 http://trip2016site.wordpress.com/2016/
    All posts from 2017 http://trip2016site.wordpress.com/2017/
    All posts from 2018 http://trip2016site.wordpress.com/2018/

There are other ways of organizing your content through categories and tags and their associated pages. You can learn more about that here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

Let us know if you have any other question.

  6. Hi @trip2016site,

Yes, it can be done in free version. Since you have marked your site as private, I am not able to look into your theme. What is the name of the theme you are using? or if you can accept my request to view your site I can give you a precise answer.

    Thank you.

  7. Hello there @iamrishaan, If a user has marked their site as Private, please do not request to be added to their site, but rather mark the thread for Staff attention. Staff can see all sites on WordPressdotcom, including Private sites. I've gone ahead and tagged this thread for Staff. Thanks again for your help here.

  8. Hi -

Thanks for the tag and help here, everyone. I'll be glad to get this sorted for you. First, please confirm that it is trip2016site.wordpress.com you're inquiring about. Thanks.

  9. Thank you for all the suggestions. I'm not sure I ever used a Theme. I'll look into that and return if I hit too many roadblocks. Many thanks for the help! Yes, lizkar, that is the correct site.

  10. That site is using Twenty Fifteen as the current theme. I can see the archives widget is added to the left hand sidebar.

  11. Yes! I added the archives last evening ... finally figured it out! Have also been watching some youtube clips about themes. Not too old to learn :-)

  12. Not too old to learn :-)

That's right! We all start at the very beginning when we learn something new, we've all been there and understand.

Let me know if you need anything else.

  13. Hello again @trip2016site, just wanted to add - make sure the YouTube videos you are watching are also relevant for WordPressdotcom. Most of those videos deal with the standalone version of WordPress.

If you prefer learning from videos, we have a whole section on our Support site dedicated to that. :) https://en.support.wordpress.com/video-tutorials/

    Cheers!
