I've been exploring assigning users "roles" on my wordpress.com sites, and I notice that while I can block Contributors from access to private or password protected pages and posts, they are able to see comments on these pages via the dashboard. Is there a workaround?

How to keep Contributors from seeing comments on private pages?
Thanks for bringing up this issue. I'm checking with our team about it, and I'll let you know as soon as I have more information. Please stay tuned, and let me know if you have any other questions or concerns in the meantime. :)
I wanted to give you an update about this. The behavior you noticed is part of the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) that WordPress.com runs on. I talked it over with our team, and we've opened a report about the issue over at WordPress.org so the developers there can address it. If you're interested, you can follow along with the report there: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/26807
In the meantime, one workaround is to invite users to view your blog instead of adding them as contributors. That way, they can view the content on the blog but can't see the blog's dashboard. We have more information about those roles here: User Roles
Please let me know if I can provide any further help with this. :)
