How to restore deleted media?

  1. I have a blog through and a few weeks ago, I permanently deleted dozens of pictures from my media library, thinking to clear up space. I did not realize that doing so would remove the pictures from my blog posts. Is there any way to restore my pictures? This is my blog:

The blog I need help with is

  2. How do I get staff to respond to this?

  3. There's no point in tagging this for Staff. There are no backups of your images. If your deleted them then we cannot help you. You can to capture what's left in Google's indexed images cache and upload the images again.

  5. Ok, thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, only a very small percentage of my pictures were cached, so I am going to have to upload them again. :( Luckily I have them on my computer.

Can I perhaps make a suggestion? I am frustrated by what happened tonight, because I never dreamed that deleting pictures from my media library would also delete them from my posts. Maybe I am just naive, but after a quick search on Google it seems that other people have made this mistake, too. If WordPress were to include a warning message about this when deleting media, then this problem would be more easily avoided.

    Again, thanks for the reply.

  6. Tagged for Staff to note.

  7. Test to the pop-up that the image will be permanently deleted from Posts, Pages, etc. should be easy to add - more trouble to find the Pop-up in the code than make the change -

good point - the delete instructions also say permanently - but does not call out Posts and Pages etc. by name

  8. Is something like this not doable? This person was able to restore their photos from an old save. Please let me know.

    Hi Sarah,

It looks like you deleted a number of files around two weeks ago. Are those the files you're referring to? If so, it looks like the closest backup date that would work for you would be 3/8/14. I can try to have that restored for you if you would like.

Just to be clear, the restore WILL wipe out any updates which you've made since then (any new posts/uploads/pages/etc). As Ash described in the post you linked to, if there have updates since then that you do not want to lose, I would recommend that you export your blog to a different blog as a temporary placeholder. Then, once everything has been restored, you can re-import it using these instructions:

Let me know if you want me to try to restore the previous save point!

  10. Yes, jeremey, that would be amazing!! Thanks so much!! (I have now exported my updates - so we're good to go.)

    Hey Sarah,

I have initiated the request to restore content from 3/8/14. I will let you know as soon as I have more info!

    Hi Sarah,

We've undeleted the files from your blog. Can you take a look at your blog posts and see if the images are still there?

  14. Jeremey, everything turned out perfectly! Thank you so much!!

Great Sarah! I'm glad this worked out. Let me know if you need anything else.
