  Hi,
  I have the basic (free) WordPress.com account, which I want to verify with Search Console. However it seems that I cannot do that unless I purchase a domain or upgrade to a paid plan. Is that true?

  Hello Marina,

  You don’t need to upgrade in order to do that.

  You can use the Site Verification Services section of your site. If you’re working on subjectivewisdomblog.wordpress.com, you can just click the link below to get into that page:

  https://wordpress.com/settings/traffic/subjectivewisdomblog.wordpress.com

  You can find the Site Verification Services at the bottom of that page. Please click on Save Settings button when you’re done.

  You can also find more information from this Support doc – Webmaster Tools.
