I Don't Want a Domain Name

  • The free account’s domain is whatever.wordpress.com and if you upgrade to a personal account, it says you can create your own domain name but what if I don’t want to and I want to keep whatever.wordpress.com? Can I upgrade to a personal plan and decline to set up my own domain name?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • No, because what you suggest would defeat your purpose.

wordpress.COM is the top level domain.
All sites hosted by wordpress.com are on .wordpress.com sub domains like this one http://41sunshine.wordpress.com/

The domain 41sunshine.com is not registered yet.

  • To use any existing custom domain on any wordpress.COM hosted site requires an upgraded plan.

Yes, you can use the Personal Plan, yes, but you need to add the plan first. If you add the domain first, Premium is selected automatically.

Go to My Site ->Plans and buy the Personal Plan, and then you can go back and claim your free domain at My Site ->Domains ->Add.

WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/

We have 4 different plans: free, personal, premium and business. All hosting is free regardless of which plan you choose. You can view all wordpress.com plan features here https://wordpress.com/pricing/ Add a plan for each of your sites here: http://store.wordpress.com/plans/.

    How domain mapping works
Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

There are 3 ways to add a custom domain to your blog. Please note that an active WordPress.com plan is required to add a custom domain to your site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#getting-started

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.

WordPress.com does not provide an email service for blogs on their sub domains or on custom domains. Please see these support docs
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/

Please go to https://wordpress.com/pricing/ if you wish to upgrade.

  • Oops! Ignore the word existing in the first sentence above.

To use any custom domain on any wordpress.COM hosted site requires an upgraded plan.

  • But I don’t want a custom domain. My blog is used as a private journal and I need more storage space so I need to upgrade to receive more storage but I do not want a custom domain. Is there a way for me to do that? If I make a custom domain, I would get tons of spam unless I buy a blocker and there is no point for me to spend even more money when my blog is just a private journal. Thank you.

  • I am not aware of any way to do that.

When we need Staff help with issues Volunteers cannot resolve like this one we type modlook into the sidebar tags on our forum threads. I did that for you. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Then we subscribe to this thread so we are notified when they respond. • Hi jennifer9269,

Can I upgrade to a personal plan and decline to set up my own domain name?

Yes, it’s possible to purchase the Personal plan and continue using your WordPress.com address (example.wordpress.com). Although this plan includes a domain credit, you don’t have to add a custom domain to your site if you don’t want one. However, the domain credit would still available if you decided to register a custom domain at a later date.

I would get tons of spam unless I buy a blocker

Can you clarify what you mean here?

    Thanks!

  • Great, glad to hear purchasing my own domain name is not required when upgrading to the personal plan.

In regards to your followup question about the spam – I once had a different blog with my own domain name and received tons of spam phone calls, text messages, and emails. It was so bad that I had to have my phone number changed. I am aware you can buy spam blockers that supposedly prevent this issue. However, I don’t want to buy anything extra that I don’t absolutely need since my blog is just a private journal that just needs more space.

    Thank you!

  • Hi jennifer9269,

I once had a different blog with my own domain name and received tons of spam phone calls, text messages, and emails.

When you purchase a domain, we give you the option to add private registration. This means the contact details you used for the domain won’t be visible to the public. There is some more information in this guide:

    Register a New Domain

If the contact information you used for the other domain was available to the public, it’s likely to be because private registration wasn’t enabled.
