I registered a username, but the same name for a blog is taken and abandoned.

    Hey guys,

So I registered under the username “inkymum” without any issue, but when I went to start my blog under the same name, it’s taken… worse yet, by someone who’s abandoned it. When you go to inkymum.wordpress.com, the former owner has left a note indicating her move to Tumblr.

I know WP can’t give me her info (and really, I can hit her up on Tumblr if need be), but is there really no way to free up the username of an abandoned blog? I tried a variation, going with “inkymom”, but that blog name is apparently “reserved”.

It all seems a little inconvenient when we’re talking about a blog that’s been flat-out dropped, and one that’s “reserved” but unused. Augh!

There is no expiration date on blogs unused or otherwise. If you can make contact on your own with the owner of an unused blog then there is a means of a consenting blog owner to transfer the blog to another username account. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account

In the case that there is no contact information Staff will not breach the privacy policy and provide you with an email address.

if you are not successful, you can register another blog with a similar name. http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/

Or you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade and it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is.

I am so new to this and thought I had started out the right way by registering.
Then I started to set up my name etc & it says it is reserved and maybe available in several days.
I think this maybe me but as it asks if I want to start another blog.
How do I find out if I messed up or it is taken by someone else.

Interesting – you should not have been able to register with a user name that matched an existing blog name – inkymum, since it matches an existing blog

I just tried to register a user name that does not exist and matches a blog name and was not allowed to register that user name

It’s very strange and I tagged this thread for a Staff response.

Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when Staff respond and please be patient while waiting.

@inkymum and @bcboomers, both of those situations are strange, and I have informed our developers so they can look into it. I will let you know as soon as I find out more.

@bcboomers, you should be good to go. Please try creating the blog again and be sure to check your email for a confirmation.

That’s what I thought, too! I found it so weird that I could take the username, but the blog was unavailable. And yet here I am…

    Hi inkymum,

It looks like there was a glitch in the signup process. You should not have been able to register “inkymum” as a username. We’re working on fixing that for the future.

Since you were the one to bring this issue to our attention, and since you can’t have inkymum.wordpress.com as a blog, I’d like to offer you a free one-year custom domain registration for inkymum.com. I’ll apply credits to your account that you can use to register the domain with privacy. With this custom domain, you can map it over any WordPress.com blog (with any blog address) and your visitors will only see the site at inkymum.com.

If you wish to register that domain, you can do so by following the directions here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/

Holy guacamole! If there are any free upgrades being handed out please don’t forget us Volunteers.

@timethief, it’s the only way that we can give them a blog associated with their username, and since the fault is ours…

I can’t offer you a free upgrade at the moment, but I did send you an email… ;)

    Hi again Jackie,
I know that and I’m just kidding you … lol :D
    Sorry I didn’t add a wink above. ;)
Email check email – OMG I’m avoiding going near it.
