I want to move to wordpress.org
I found these directions but not technically minded and stuck at the start. I WANT TO MOVE FROM .COM TO .ORG SO THAT I CAN USE GOGGLE ADSENSE ETC
“From the menu on the left, click on TOOLS – EXPORT. At this point, you have the option to confine the export to a particular author or all authors.” CAN SOMEONE ADVISE WHAT THE AUTHOR IS?
It then states that “The second part of this guide refers to an installation of WordPress 2.7. Login to your self installed WordPress administration panel and from the menu on the left click on TOOLS – IMPORT”. DOES THIS PART REFER TO THE NEW WORDPRESS.ORG and DO I NEED TO SET THIS UP FIRST?
a HUGE thanks in advance for advice.
The blog I need help with is sharonyoungphotography.com.
Hi. Where did you find those instructions? If they refer to WordPress 2.7, they are very outdated.
Try these instead:
There used to be a drop-down menu where you could limit the export to the content published by just one author or by all the authors. It was only useful if you had more than one author on your blog.
Also, could you do us a favour and avoid writing ALL IN CAPS in the future? All caps means screaming. You don’t want to scream at us, right? :-)
Hi there, thanks for that, I’ll try your link. So sorry, no screaming intended.
Hi, I have tried to read through everything. Just a few q’s if anyone can help please.
Do I first need to choose a web hosting before I then install wordpress.org?
When I go through the process of the web hosting (i.e GoDaddy), is that when I would be asked to choose a domain name?
I already have http://www.sharonyoungphotography.com and this is on all my advertising business cards etc and doesn’t expire until May 2012. I read that you can only transfer a domain after 60 days from its initial registration.
Thanks again in advance.
1) Sign up with a web host
2) Install the WordPress.ORG software and set the new site the way you want it to look (your host should have a way for you to work on the new site without your domain name)
3) Export your content from here and import it to your new site / host
4) Change the name servers for your domain (sharonyoungphotography.com) to point to your new web host – wait 24 to 72 hours for the changes to migrate to the far corners of the internet.
5) Set your old site here to Private in case you want to use the same base site again.
6) Your domain registration can be kept here – no need to move it unless you want – no need to change business cards etc.
Oh thankyou so much. You make it sound so easy, so I’ll give it a go. When you say 3.Export your content from here and import it to your new site / host, do you mean that I then go to my wordpress.com to “export”? . I thought I would first go to export from there and then “import” from the tools menue on wordpress.org. Sorry as I’m not technically minded.
The host would be for e’g ‘GoDadddy’, as oppsed to wordpress.org? So, I would need to have my content on wordpress.org and export it to GoDaddy.
Am I in wordpress.org when I Change the name servers for my domain (sharonyoungphotography.com) to point to my new web host (i.e GoDaddy?).
I think I might need to go through the motions before I understand but I’m scared I lose all my posts and pages.
My confusion is that wordpress.com is my website, so I thought I would still remain with wordpress. So, is the host where I then choose another theme for e.g and not wordpress? Oh la la. thanks in advance. I’m determined to do this!

GoDaddy is your hosting provider. WordPress.org is another name for the self-hosted version of WordPress which you install on GoDaddy (or any other hosting provider).
do you mean that I then go to my wordpress.com to “export”? . I thought I would first go to export from there and then “import” from the tools menue on wordpress.org.
As auxclass said, on your WordPress.com dashboard, you select “Export”. On the dashboard of the WordPress software you install on GoDaddy, you select “Import”.

Yes, and this his how you change the nameservers.
My confusion is that wordpress.com is my website, so I thought I would still remain with wordpress.
Your website will run a different flavour of WordPress. Instead of it being WordPress.com, it will be WordPress.org. The two are separate. Before you ask any further questions and to clear any further confusion, please read this:
You need to be perfectly sure you know what you are doing. Going self-hosted is a very big step and you are responsible for absolutely everything, from doing backups to updating software to protecting your site from attacks.
Sorry, forgot the link with the instructions to update the nameservers
Go over this instructions from @airodysey above:
Try these instead:
WordPress.ORG is not a host – they are the keepers of the software you will be using.
You can have pay the staff for a Guided Transfer if you want – they set up your new site on one of their pardner web hosts. http://get.wp.com/hosting/
Am I in wordpress.org when I Change the name servers for my domain (sharonyoungphotography.com) to point to my new web host
No that is changed where the name is registered. (WordPress.COM)
No content will be lost unless you delete it – Export just makes a copy of the text and links to your images of your blog –
My confusion is that wordpress.com is my website, so I thought I would still remain with wordpress. So, is the host where I then choose another theme for e.g and not wordpress?
WordPress.COM is your host and domain name registrar –
Do keep in mind that when you move you will have a lot more responsibilities than you do here – you will be the system admin and will be the one that updates the WordPress.ORG software when new versions are released, if the site crashes you fix it –
Oh lord, the last comment has terrified my. I wanted to move as I get a lot of traffic to my site and felt that I could maybe make some money through adsense etc but maybe it’s not worth the risk?
Do you want to sell your pictures or ads for Viagra or whatever?
A 1,000 page views or so per month is not a lot of traffic – if I were you I would not put ads on the site – I would not want distractions from my pictures – I would spend the time promoting being a photographer not selling ads that tend to not make much money.
No ads on your site would be more class than ads.
Most people seem to not really make much with ads unless you can sell to very targeted people.
The advantage here is that the system admin stuff you don’t need to worry about – it is done for you by the staff – that is part of the reason I moved onto WordPress.COM, so I did not need to worry about the updates etc.
Hi I have to agree, so I think I’ll stay put. Thanks so much for all the advice. Really helpful.
You be welcome & good luck
