In desparate need of help
Hi. I hope someone can help me. I have no knowledge of building a website with html and have been using Web Page Maker for the past 5 years. Web Page Maker was awesome because it allows you to simply insert images and text and you can then freely move all around with your mouse and put them exactly where you want them. This has given me the artistic freedom of making my website look exactly how I want it to. I was also able to easily link images to either other wesites, my email or another page on my website. Well, all of the sudden, all but one of my pages is NOT showing. Only my Main Page works. It looks like I am going to have to start fro scratch and am thinking of using WordPress for my website now. Can someone take a look at my website pages and tell me if I will be able to get the same look I have now with WordPress? I am stressed big time over this.
Thank you for your help : ) I have a temporary WordPress page up but if I can do what I need to do here, I will be upgrading. Please email an help to (email redacted)
Blog url: http://denisepurrington.wordpress.com/
The blog I need help with is denisepurrington.wordpress.com.
I forgot to add that Web Page Maker is no longer supporting their program. Their phone number has been disconnected and they don’t answer their email. So, this program has been rendered useless. Thus, the start of my problems.
Thanks again for any help you can give me.
I don’t know where my mind is at. I asked you to look at my website pages and forgot to give you the address. Here it is:
We do not provide support for your website here. The only blogs we provide support for on this WordPress.com support forum is blog being provided by and free hosted by WordPress.com. That includes this blog http://denisepurrington.wordpress.com/ but do note that we do not provide support by email.
Can someone take a look at my website pages and tell me if I will be able to get the same look I have now with WordPress?
I think they want to move.
It looks like they hand make the bears so that should be OK – the lots of pictures I am not so sure about as I don’t do much fancy picture stuff – others would be better at the look & what themes might work – maybe one of the news themes that have a grid on the front page
Thank you.. So on WordPress, you have to use a template? You can’t make a website from scratch?
You cannot build or use your own custom theme built from scratch at WordPress.com.
The only themes we can use are those found here > Appearance > Themes
This is a multiuser blogging platform. All blogs wearing the same theme are using the same underlying template and we cannot access the underlying files and edit templates or themes. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/
There are two free themes, Sandbox and Toolbox designed to allow maximum flexibility for CSS editing and creating new “skins”. Toolbox is more modern and includes a lot of support for CSS3 and HTML5, so it is really only limited by your skills and knowledge.
If you have CSS editing experience the upgrade will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but will not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. It does not allow you to remove footer links to the theme designer or to WordPress.com. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes at WordPress.COM. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-css/

I notice that you have a blog entry from September 20 where you say you are looking into getting a wordpress auction plugin. Please read the last link provided by timethief avout wordpress.com vs. wordpress.org. You will not be able to use a plugin at wordpress.com. If you use wordpress.org you will need to get a webhost for that version of wordpress.
Thank you all for your help. Besides being reminded that I’m at WordPress.com rather then .org where I needed to be, I am more confused then ever. I guess Web Page Maker has really dumbed me down seeing as I didn’t have to know anything.
Thanks again and wish me luck : )
I do wish you luck. There is a learning curve to wordpress and wordpress.com gives you a more controlled environment for that learning. A self- hosted blog using the wordpress.org software requires even more from you. They do have support forums over at .org or you might want to continue to experiment and learn at .com, then when you have conquered this and when you need the plugins, you can make the move to the .org version.
You might try working through this tutorial with your free website to get the idea of how easy it is to use this platform, how many ways you can modify it, and how it might fit your needs:
Also note that there are many many themes you can use, with a great variety of features you won’t have to build yourself:
There is also an (inexpensive) upgrade here if you want to have your own domain name (sans the .wordpress.com appendage):
Here is the info about the difference between wp.COM and wp.ORG:
And as for plugins, we have widgets that do many of the things you probably want to do.
Sorry, but I’m not an employee, but only a volunteer who finds wp.com very good for my blogs…
As for Paypal, I believe you don’t have to use the “donate” button, but you cannot have a shopping cart option.
Thank you so much everyone for your wonderful help : )
I did manage to get my website up and running again. Just had to redo all of my pages. The old ones got corrupted somehow I believe.
I will be using wordpress.org in the future for the auction plug in.
Many thanks again.
Denise : )
You are welcome (dare I say from all of us?). So I’ll mark this thread resolved.
