    Hi,

I recently tried downloading and installing WordPress on my computer but got stuck. I downloaded the Webmatrix thingy and every time I try installing WordPress, it comes to the page of creating a server (won’t let me) or using an existing server (won’t let me). Any help ?!?!

You did not specify a blog address or reason for posting when you created this topic.

This support forum is for blogs hosted at WordPress.com. If your question is about a self-hosted WordPress blog then you’ll find help at the WordPress.org forums.

If you don’t understand the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, you may find this information helpful.

If you forgot to include a link to your blog, you can reply and include it below. It’ll help people to answer your question.

    This is an automated message.

Maybe, but you can’t “install WordPress” on WordPress.com: it’s already installed. Why not follow the supportbot’s friendly advice?

    I have a name.wordpress.com address.

I see that you have your usename linked to a free hosted WordPress.com blog. There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and we cannot install individual plugins into them or third party themes. Those found on the internet are for WordPress.ORG installs which run on different software.

If you wish to have complete control over a blog, the ability to upload themes and plugins, and to edit themes and templates then your option is to hire a web host and get a free software install from WordPress.ORG and self host it.

is there any way then, alternatively, to have a page as a category without the plugins? the theme i’m using has a menu at the top which has Home, About, and any others i wish to include. it would be great if i could add categories into the menu

    thanks

the site linked to your name is an empty site with a couple of test posts – to give you accurate help we need the URL of the site that you want help with.

You can have a “Page” link to a category – use a custom menu to add a link to sort a specific category out –

this should get you started: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
