IP address

  1. What are the IP addresses for WordPress that I need to map my current domain to my blog? What happens if these addresses change?

The blog I need help with is

  2. What happens if these addresses change?

    Your blog crashes

Changing the name servers is the best way, WordPress.COM does not support static IP addresses. Is there a reason you don't want to change the name servers?

  3. Here are the domain mapping instructions

  4. Thanks so much for your reply. My domain host requested both the server name and IP address.

  5. Thanks so much for your reply. My domain host requested both the server name and IP address.

  6. Here are the current IP addresses that Whats my DNS lists for my domain mapped to WordPress.COM

A few things to keep in mind, when I first moved here 3 years or so ago there were only 3 listed - last month 6 were listed - the IP address go up and down based on load balancing, how equipment is operating, does a router need to be taken down and replaced or upgraded etc

WordPress.COM will not guarantee a static IP address

  7. Beautiful, thank you. I am considering just canceling my domain registration and then registering it with WordPress instead to avoid my blog crashing if the IP addresses change.

  8. DON'T CANCEL THE DOMAIN REGISTRATION - you might loose the domain name to a squatter and it might be held hostage by someone - also it can take to around 60 days for a canceled name to revert to the "wild"

Even if you just bought the domain name and are within the 48 hour cancel period it can still take many days to revert to the wild

You can transfer the domain name to another registrar if you want - BUT NOT WordPress.COM they are not set up to accept incoming domain name transfers

There is a 60 day window after you buy a domain name (and a couple of other events but can't remember them) when it can't be transferred - internet fraud prevention rules.

Some of my friends use Name Cheap for a Registrar

You should be able to get the domain name to work with a blog here - lots of help in the forum and the staff is very good helping with sticky problems

  9. Ok! Thanks for clarifying, I'm clearly a newbie at this.

I'll map from my current registrar and if IP address changes lead to my blog crashing, I'll change registrars to someone who just needs server names and not IP addresses. Will check out Name Cheap.

Thanks again, really appreciate your time.

  10. You be welcome & good luck - just did not want you to repeat some mistakes I have seen others do - then they show up in the forum with a tale of woe and many times there is not much we can do for them

  11. Great service from the forum, very handy :)
