Is a multi-language option for my site possible?

  1. Hi,

I'm wondering if it's possible have the backbone elements (i.e. not the posts) of my site available in another language, from the home page. I've seen sites that offer this by having a little flag to click on, each representing the language they want to see: Eng, French, Spanish, etc...

I can provide the translated words if that's an issue, but I'm wondering if I can have that option at all on this platform.

I hope I've explained it clearly - let me know otherwise!

    Thanks!
    C.

The blog I need help with is theleader.ca.

  2. C,

Here are three methods for setting up a multilingual blog, but I'm guessing you're looking for something a little different.

You could provide links from your site that use translate.google.com for various languages...like:

    https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=fr&u=http%3A%2F%2Ftheleader.ca%2F&sandbox=1

  3. You can set only one interface languages at > Dashboard > Settings > General.

We do not have FTP access and we bloggers cannot install any plugins, we cannot use Microsoft or Google translation widgets or any others, as they are JavaScript and it's stripped out to preserve security on this multiuser blogging platform. http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/#javascript

However, I have translation on my WordPress.com blogs. There are two workarounds and you will find them here > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/02/14/translation-widget-for-wordpress-com-blogs/
Note: You can copy and paste the code on my Translations page http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/translation/ and then replace every occurrence of my blog's URL in the code with your own blog's URL.

If you are bilingual or multilingual and want to publish your free hosted WordPress.com in two or more languages but do not want to rely on machine translation that can be done see here > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/02/25/wordpress-com-multilingual-blogs/ and here

  4. Thank you both for the info!

The machine translated stuff won't work...I saw what you sent me in google translate and the French translation is hilarious! I'm French:) That being said, I can't use it. Translations are a touchy matter.

I really wanted a button to click and the main site features would change to French, without the articles themselves being translated. I'll have a look at what you both sent and see if I can make something work for me!

    Merci:)

  5. Hi @cfournier224, what some have done is to create two sites, one for one language and one for the other and then added a link or linked image to the other site in their main navigation so that people can get from one to the other. They then set both sites with the same theme and header so they look the same.

  6. @theacrepath: Yes, I noticed that in my research. It's not quite what I need for now but good to know for the future. For now, I decided to add a tab for French content - it will meet my current needs and if it grows in popularity, I can consider other options like adding another site only in that language. Thanks for chiming in, I appreciate it!

This is off-topic, but do you know if I can have a landing (home) page that incorporates feed from my category pages? I had another ticket opened for this but no resolution came of it:

I describe how to do that here http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/02/25/wordpress-com-multilingual-blogs/

  9. Oops! I will describe ...
    Thanks.

  10. @timethief (love your screen name, btw:)

I realize this is an option and I may have to consider it later on....I was seeing what were the options available to me and I got several good ideas from everyone who chimes in!

I was signing up for a WebEx account this week and noticed that they have the feature similar to what I had in mind:
    http://www.webex.com

There is an option at the top to have the site appear in several different languages. I do realize that this is a WAY more sophisticated platform and perhaps my ambitions exceed what WordPress can do for me right now:)

    Merci!
