When I tried to upload a background image, it changed my theme to the selected theme of the day, so I selected one that does not show the sidebar on secondary pages and took away my links widget. How do I keep this from happening again?

Your blog is private and we Volunteers cannot view it. We don’t have a clue what you have done or which themes were included. What we do know is that what you describe is not normal behavior. Selecting a background at ? Appearance > Background is not even done on the same page where we change themes. > Appearance > Themes

You can go here Dashboard > Appearance > Themes and select a theme and activate it as many times as you choose to. No data is ever lost when changing themes. After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets re-install them where you want them to appear.
