just started…nothing is familiar, dashboard does not even match support images

  • Greetings. I just purchased WordPress.com Premium this week to set up a website. I’ve spent a few days experimenting with pages, menus, etc., but I noticed that support topics have screenshots of the program that look very different from what I’ve been using from the beginning. For example, the support screenshots have a dark-colored dashboard on the left side of the screen, while mine is light blue in the middle of the screen. I don’t have all of the options listed in help topics, such as an “Appearance” menu option. And when I click on “Plugins” there is only a message that asks if I want to upgrade to Business to add shopping. I even did a Google image search for “wordpress dashboard” and cannot find a single image of the dashboard I’ve started with. In sum, I’m having a lot of difficulty getting started because what I’m starting with doesn’t match even the most basic beginner support material. Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • WordPress.com has been rolling out a unique Dashboard for all its users and has updated many of the Support docs to reflect this, but not all.

There are two main dashboards in WordPress.com:
Your site’s WP Admin Dashboard found at https://christophercfuchsdotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ endearingly called the “classic” dashboard

and the New Dashboard that you land on at https://wordpress.com/ which is probably something like https://wordpress.com/stats/day/christophercfuchsdotcom.wordpress.com

You might want to look at this guide to help you get started: https://learn.wordpress.com/ and

  • Thank you. My current problem is that I’ve created a home page, additional pages, a menu linking them together, and 3 test posts, but the posts don’t show up anywhere. I’ve confirmed they were published. The support material says they should show up on the home page, but they don’t. They seem to be floating in the ether, not connected to any of my pages. Thanks.

  • Hi again, I see your test posts here: http://christophercfuchs.com/home/blog/

It look like you’ve set a static front page (under construction) to be your front/home page. By default the Posts page is the home page.

If you want your Posts page to be your front page, go to https://christophercfuchsdotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php and change the setting “Front page displays:” to “your latest posts” and save your settings.

I warmly recommend going through at least the https://learn.wordpress.com/ to get your feet wet and check out the Support docs at https://en.support.wordpress.com/ for specific issues.

If you still can’t sort it out, let us know.

  • Sorry about that. I found the options-reading settings after I posted the question. I have read thru the newbie stuff but apparently I’m not absorbing it well enough. Thanks for the tips, as I do want the front page to have the posts (I don’t want a separate Blog page).
    Thanks again.
